So I will be a college freshman at a school known for partying (SDSU) and I am worried that I won't be able to study cause im in a double room and it will probably be loud from time to time.

What is every one's fix if you are studying in your room and want to get rid of all the noise? I plan on getting noise-cancelling headphones or do I need noise-cancelling, or should i get the nice earbuds that look like earplugs?

simplest thing to do for noise while studying: go to the library! go to the dorm common room/study room/empty room! blast classical music/whatever music doesnt distract from your ipod!
blocking out noise while youre trying to sleep is a little more difficult- find the thread on how to deal with a roommate who snores for sleep suggestions.

yes, i really do think that the library is the only true solution. even if you have noise-cancelling headphones on, a bit of the noise and commotion will still seep in and you'll get distracted by the fact that drunkards are next door anyways. if it makes any difference, it has been proven that those who study in the library make better grades on average than those who do so in the dorm.

if by double room you just mean you have one roommate and you're worried about that, don't be. unless you have a really terrible roommate who has no respect then they aren't gonna be bringing people around the room when they know you are studying, there is always somewhere else to go. it's only gonna be annoying if they come home really late and drunk and wake you up (i was sometimes guilty of that). also, i had really loud neighbors when i lived in the dorms last year but i couldn't hear them through the wall, only from out in the hallway. that said, i agree with the library thing but sometimes that place just makes you want to die if you go there enough.

hey deedee- i'd like to see the reference for the study that you say "proves" that library studiers do better. im just curious where you found that info

don't study in the room, go to the library. Also look at the info for the dorm; some dorms have study rooms set aside as quiet places to get work done.

Maybe I'm the only one who studies in my dorm.

My dorm had rules about noise levels. Most of the times that I'd be studying would be quiet hours. If things got noisy for any extended period of time(which was often) I'd call the resident assistant up and kindly ask him to go do his job and give out some warnings/write ups for the morons making noise outside my door. Yes, I was that person on the floor... the one who wanted ALL the rules enforced. During times where there weren't quiet hours, I went to a study lounge. I went to the library ONCE during the past year and that was to get a book. It's a nice place, but for me the silence is annoying.

The problem will be more with getting a decent night's sleep because of the noise than studying. Learn to sleep with earplugs and a sleep mask before you go to dull the noise and keep your roomie from waking you up when he/she comes in late. If anybody calls you nerdy for going to the library to study, they probably shouldn't be in college in the first place are are not worth knowing, so don't worry 'bout it.

no, it's not nerdy to go to the library. plenty of people stay there... all day. almost every time i went to the library there were surfer guys sitting there studying away.. and baseball players.. and all kinds of "cool" kids..
