Okay - this is SOOOO non-academically related…but does anyone know if there is a golf course on campus, or very near to campus?

Thanks!

Not one on campus.

There is a country club nearby (Indian Hills Country Club), but don’t know if students can use it.

There is a public golf course - Mimosa Park Golf Course

Thanks! Just what I needed to know!

Yes there is, and UA got a golf grant last year (part of the Play Golf America Program (PGAU), funded by a grant from the PGA for the University of AL by Mr. Boo Weekely, Ryder Cup golfer. Course is taught by two PGA professionals or apprentice professionals using the PGA’s “First Swing” curriculum. Class meets at Ol Colony golf practice facility.)

There are two different 1 credit courses available for golf: Beginning Golf & Intermediate Golf.
The Play Golf sections meet at Ol Colony; the regular Beginning Golf sections meet at Woodland Forrest Golf Course. Not sure where the Intermediate class meets.

You can find those listed under the Kinesiology Department.

Thanks RobD. Not too worried about golf courses - altho the intermediate one might have potential. DS will be on the Varsity team next year and while he would LIKE to make a college team - he is more interested in having a course closeby to play on. He won’t have a car, so accessibility is critical.

I am encouraging D to take a 1 credit “fun” class or two her first semester, to help her settle in and rediscover the things she used to enjoy doing on a regular basis before AP classes weighed her down. She almost tried out for the golf team this year, but then decided it might be too much. When I looked at the schedule the other day and told her there was a golf class, her first question was “where will I put my clubs in my dorm room?”

Oops…

Were you asking if there is a golf course on campus/Tuscaloosa, or if there were any golf classes/teams on campus?

RobD, if your daughter lives in the honors dorms, there is a nice storage closet that every suite gets. The golf clubs will fit there.

Thanks momreads; I’ll let her know She’s definitely going to be in the Honors dorms.

Golfing is very popular in Alabama and that extends to UA students. I remember reading something that said Alabama had either the most public golf courses or total golf courses out of any state or something of that nature. None are near Tuscaloosa, but the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail (in various parts of Alabama) is very popular.

When we were at Ridgecrest for Capstone Day, a young lady walked in with a red and white golf bag, full of clubs, with her name on it. Wondered if she was on the golf team.
And yes, the closets in the dorms are definitely big enough for golf clubs. And yes, golf is very popular in Alabama.

True that the Robert Trent Jones golf trail isn’t near T-town, but there are other golf courses in T-town.

And, yes, most boys could fit their clubs in the dorm closet, but girls will likely want to use the suite’s storage closet which is right outside the suite (and locked for security).

For those interested in the RTJ courses… [Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail ? The Trail](<a href=“RTJ Golf Trail - Page Not Found”>RTJ Golf Trail - Explore the Trail)

There aren’t any golf courses that close enough that you can get there without a car.

Ol’ Colony is a public golf course. Student memberships are $350 a semester. Greens fee are $45 (cart included). Hidden Meadows is the other golf course. Don’t know how much memberships or fees are.

The Links at Tuscaloosa is an off-campus apartment complex that has a golf course on-site

Thanks for all the information!

I was interested in nearby golf courses. He won’t have a car - so he’s really interested in schools that have courses on campus. I was actually surprised to see that there are a lot! I wouldn’t have expected that.

This won’t, of course, be the deciding factor!!! But at least it gives us a good start on selecting a list of schools!

My DH has played 5 of the courses on the Robert Trent Jones golf trail with some of his golf buddies. I was thrilled to find out that this year they have added spa features to many of the courses. One of the things I’ll be happy to be partaking in once we have some time for weekend travel :)

^^That works for me, too, RobD!!!

If he’s going to be golfing with a foursome, then probably someone will have a car. However, if not, then they can pool their money together and rent a Bama Zipcar for the few hours or day that they need a car… (I believe that insurance is included)

**For those who won’t have cars on campus…

Bama has Zipcars…**

Faculty, staff, and students may join the Zipcar program for a sign-up charge of $35 and then can drive for as little as $8 per hour or $66 per day weekdays and $9 per hour or $72 per day on weekends.

When you consider that having a car on campus costs about $250 per year for a permit, it’s not too much money to occasionally “pool” costs with friends when no one has a car to use.

[University of Alabama News Zipcar Launches Car Sharing Program at UA](http://uanews.ua.edu/2009/08/zipcar-launches-car-sharing-program-at-ua/)

Zipcar allows students to use cars on an hour-long, daily or even a weeklong basis with rates that vary according to the day of the week. Zipcar’s system allows students to join and then reserve a car when they need one.

Once the reservation is confirmed, the member can use their card, or Zipcard, to activate and unlock the reserved car, said Zipcar spokesman Jaime Quick. The keys will be located in the car along with a gas card.

Ronnie Robertson, UA director of transportation, said discussions about a possible partnership with Zipcar began in May.

“Now, I think we’ve completed a full transportation circle,” Robertson said. “We have the Crimson Ride, 348-RIDE through the night, and now we have Zipcar if students need to get off campus.”

Oh, I had forgotten about those. I wonder how much use their getting.
