do u think there is any way that i can give up MY acceptance for a friend who has been waitlisted to a certain college? at some parts, i think it can be possible (maybe im going insane), but it kind of sounds unreasonable...

what you can do is write a letter stating that you are going to a different college and that ____ is a great candidate for the school because ____. the amount of helpfullness is debateable, but i seriously doubt that it would hurt their cause.

A couple of points: first, most schools accept more than they expect to attend, so declining doesn’t necessarily mean that anybody will get in off the waitlist. And even if it did, the waitlist may be ranked, or it may be used to fill certain types of gaps in the class (i.e., viola players, people from Idaho). So your gesture is unlikely to help, although it probably wouldn’t hurt.

Being on a wait list means that there is some small chance that you will get an offer of admission only if not enough of the originally admitted group enrolls. A lot of colleges don’t make any offers to students on their waiting list, and many only make offers to a dozen or so students.
