does anyone on here own horses that they had to leave home when going to college? well i have two horses at home that i am going to have to leave behind when i go to college, i love them dearly and they are my life. i was wondering how hard it might be for me to leave them behind? i am 4 hours away from home so i can't just go home when i want to see them, i also need to know what would help cope with this?

lol you’re worried about how you’re gonna be able to leave your horses behind, but you aren’t worried about you’re gonna be able to leave your parents behind. Interesting.

Personally, I would miss my dog more than my parents. One can still chat with parents on the phone or by e-mail or skype…one cannot spend time with a pet while away.

Have you already chosen a school? Could go to one with an equestrian program.

We had a pony on our property when I went to college. It died about half way through the year. He was old though.

Mmk indeed. And I too shall be quite saddened with the separation from my servant, Geeves.

StarrysGirl - I’m a parent, not a college student but my D also has a horse that she will not be taking to college. Her horse will be sold next year before she leaves for college because he is a show hunter and still has many good years of horse showing ahead of him at the highest levels in hunters.

My D is thinking about riding on a Division I college equestrian team because she has the experience jumping and showing at 3’6" and has already been invited by several colleges to visit. This is how she will be dealing with not having her horse in college.

I don’t know if you ride competitively or not, but if you do you may want to check out colleges with riding teams (there are many that are not Div I) so that you can spend time with horses. Good luck.
