I don't know much about colleges, and I was hoping that someone could explain dorm arrangements to me. I know there are doubles and quads, but what else is there? And what exactly is the difference between them? Thanks!

Dorm arrangements differ from college to college and year to year. Which schools might you be interested in?

Bowdoin, Williams, Amherst, Connecticut College, and Colby are currently my top 5

Look at the housing or residential life section of the web site for the schools you are interested in. Most have descriptions of the various options. Some have floor plans. Some have a few pictures (also check the campus visit- virtual tour section for pictures).

Freshmen just about everywhere are in doubles, with each student getting one side of the room with her own bed, dresser, desk, and closet. Some offer suites-- two doubles that share a bathroom and maybe a common area. Upperclassmen usually have more options-- singles, suites, or apartments.

Thanks, mom58! I’ll look at their websites right now.

I still can’t figure out what a quad is, though. Bowdoin doesn’t explain it on their website.

http://www.williams.edu/dean/campus_life/getaroom.html

"Williams is a residential college, and the majority of our students live in campus housing. Our buildings range in size from small co-operatives where senior students cook and clean for themselves, to larger residence halls divided into suites and groups.

First Year Housing
First-year students live in “entries” of approximately twenty-five students, headed by a pair of Junior Advisors (JAs). JAs are third-year students who provide support, friendship, and advice to their first-year residents. Together they share six residence halls – Sage, Williams, Mills, Dennett, Armstrong, and Pratt. First-year students are housed in both singles and doubles. First years are affiliated to each neighborhood through their entry, and are eligible to participate in Neighborhood life."

[Appleton (Bowdoin, Residential Life)](<a href=“Residential Life | Bowdoin College”>Residential Life | Bowdoin College)

“Appleton Hall is a four-story, brick residence that houses approximately 65 students in quad rooms. Each quad comprises two double bedrooms and a common room. There are male and female bathrooms on each floor hallway. There is a common room on the first floor and study rooms on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors”

Unfortunately you need a login/password to view the room blueprints.

Merci beaucoup! I appreciate it.
