Hi,
Right now I am a senior, and I am planning to apply to Carnegie Mellon. However, my stats are only mediocre, at the most:
GPA: ~3.7-3.8 Rank 30/311
SAT: 1800s (I only took it once...)
SAT II math Level 2 and Physics: (500-600s)

AP English Lang: 4
AP US History: 2

I'm taking AP Calculus this year.
I am in Robotics, National Honor Society, and this mentorship program. I also volunteer.

I plan on retaking the SAT I and SAT II (math and physics). I think I've fallen in love with Carnegie Mellon :/ and this is bad because I'll probably be so heartbroken if I am not accepted... my parents want me to apply to more schools, but I can't seem to find any that I am particularly interested in... Any suggestions? Location is pretty important. I am from a nice quiet (and relatively safe city). I like cities like Pittsburgh... nice and kind of quiet, but still a lot of city life. Great safety record.

P.S. Yes, I know my stats are not that great, but I come from a public high school where 1800s on the SATs are actually considered pretty high (majority of students get 1500s)... and my HS rarely sends students to top tier colleges.

jvtDad: I’m not really sure about RPI because of it’s lack of diversity and the huge gap in the male to female ratio (I guess that is why you say I’ll be golden for RPI? lol)

Being a female will probably help you, but, even so, your test scores are a little bit too low for ECE at CMU. I would say it is a reach for you. I agree with your parents that you should also apply to other (safety) schools

I think Case Western Reserve is similar - your SAT scores might still be a little low for them (not sure, check their data), but has a lot of similarities and is somewhat less competitive for ECE/EE.

The reason RPI has a worse ratio is because they don’t have as strong of fine arts and humanities majors. Those fields tend to steer CMU’s back towards 50/50. If you look within the engineering college, though, the numbers will be closer to what you see at Case Western and RPI.

Back ages ago when I was looking at undergrad schools I also applied to RPI, Worcester Polytech, RIT, Rose-Hulman, and another one I can’t remember anymore.

^ If OP is OOS I wouldn’t bet on GA Tech, considering the stats and diversity (that is, 1/5 of GT student body is Asian A). Case is an excellent recommendation though.

OP
Even as a female applying EE-- with SAT1 and SATII scores so far below acceptable, no chance. You have to retake those. They aren’t “mediocre” - they are really way too low.
MATHII must be in the 700s = maybe 650 for a female in CIT EE.

Apply CIT regular and not EE with those scores-- never know.

Look at other [Association of Independent Technological Universities: AITU](http://theaitu.org) schools. Of those, Illinois Institute of Technology, Case Western Resaerve University, Cooper Union, Drexel, Polytechnic Institute of New York, and Milwaukee School of Engineering are in cities.
