I'm looking at Brown and Wesleyan and love the open and alternative atmosphere. I also would like to be in/near a city. My intended majors are theater and English (Creative Writing). What are some schools you would suggest looking at?

Try Yale, Tufts, Vassar, Cornell, NYU

Sarah Lawrence, Reed, Pomona

UC Berkley?

thanks! I am looking into Vassar, Reed, and Tufts already but a lot of those sound interesting!

Also, many of these are competitive schools admissions-wise so do you have any suggestions for safety/easier to get into schools that are like Brown and Wes?

Oberlin, Skidmore, Bard

In order to get good recommendations you need to provide your stats (~ 3.5 GPA and a 27 ACT from another thread). Almost all of the schools mentioned will be reaches at this point.

O sorry… My ACT (Sept) was 30 with 26 Sci 28 Math 32 Reading 34 English. I’m retaking it and am hoping to raise it to 31. My gpa is 3.5 ( though my school does not compute gpa…it is the best school in my area and so the classes are especially rigorous…colleges know it very well).

I think that Sarah Lawrence would be a match for you. It really is a very, very interesting school. Most of the rest–Pomona, Reed, Brown, Wes, Tufts, Vassar, Yale-- will be significant reaches. (Cornell is a reach too, but I don’t think it really is what you are looking for anyway.) Oberlin is less reachy than these.

In order to expand your selection of matches, you may have to give up on the city thing. I agree that you should check out Bard and Skidmore. Another school to consider is Kenyon (reportedly good writing program, although not terrible alternative atmosphere). Instead of Cornell, how about Ithaca College? Instead of Reed, how about Lewis & Clark?

thank you for your reply… i’ve looked into Sarah Lawrence and Kenyon and loved both of them! I’m not really as interested in Pomona, Cornell, or Yale really(not the atmosphere im looking for). If I were to apply ED to Wesleyan, what do you think my chances could be (its my dream school, really).

Kenyon is great for writing but, as Consolation said, not an alternative atmosphere. Not near a city either. Look at Lewis and Clark in Portland OR, good alternative atmosphere, less reachy than Reed.

University of Puget Sound
Occidental (?)
UNC Ashville

New School in Sarasota or Eckerd in St. Petersburg?
