I was starting to work on my Brown supplements, and was wondering what the differences are between the following two questions:

Because you have expressed an interest in Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology, Mathematics or Physics, we would like to know a bit more about you. Respond to the following questions separately, and please remember to include the number corresponding to each question in your uploaded response! (Limit your total response to 500 words.)

Many applicants to college are unsure about eventual majors. What factors led you to your interest? What experiences beyond school work have broadened your interest? (Feel free to elaborate on one of your previous responses.)

What concept in your anticipated major were you most proud of mastering?

Briefly describe the course(s) you have taken relating to your chosen field.

Why are you drawn to the area(s) of study you indicated in our Member Section, earlier in this application? If you are “undecided” or not sure which Brown concentrations match your interests, consider describing more generally the academic topics or modes of thought that engage you currently. (150 word limit)

I understand that Parts 2 and 3 of the first question are quite different from the second question, but what about part 1 of the first question? It sounds like the same as the second question to me.

I’m not exactly sure what you’re asking, but this might help: Question 1 is pretty much Why did you choose this major. Question 2 is pretty much describe one thing in your major that you enjoyed mastering.

By the way, what is the point of question three? Do we just write the classes relating to our major?

^Uhh sorry; the way I typed that out was a little weird haha. What I was asking is, what is the difference between these two:

Also, my interpretation of Question 3 is describe how courses have impacted you as a student and/or influenced your decision to major in a particular subject.

I think the Why are you drawn to the area(s) of study? is more like Why these areas at Brown. On the other hand, there is already a Why Brown essay, so I’m not sure.

Just FYI, this question has been asked numerous times because Brown has asked these questions for several years. If you search a bit you might find oher answers.

@fireandrain I saw some posts regarding this question before, but all of the replies seemed unsure. I wanted to see if anyone knew if there was an exact way that Brown wanted applicants to respond to these questions, but since that doesn’t seem to be the case, I guess I’ll just split my response between the two questions. Thanks for the info though!
