Kid is a rising junior and just beginning the search. Wants to be in New England, or CA. Artsy but does not want an arts school. 4.0 GPA at boarding school where he is a faculty kid. Close to snowboarding a big plus. Would like the option of going to an urban environment every now and then, but does not prefer an urban campus. Definitely cool with rural. Undecided, but is passionate about photography, likes writing and is interested in tv/film production. Has been a working professional actor for several years (tv/film, not theater).
He likes Bard, and will definitely apply there. We will check out Bennington and Sarah Lawrence. Currently has Ithaca on his list, and maybe Emerson although that may be too urban. Vassar may be his reach?
maybe middlebury? artsy, outdoors type kids (definitely pretty preppy:white too tho so idk if that is a dealbreaker) <1 hr from burlington but gorgeous rural campus in the mountains in vt (the college owns a ski hill that is super cheap/free for first years)
Doesn’t fit his current location criteria - but if he is flexible I know Kenyon has a well loved film program, lots of acting opportunities in student films, theater, nature and access by car to Columbus for concerts etc. No snowboarding - but snow. Plenty of east coast kids and Calif with film interests and connections.
Not NE or CA but Oberlin & Beloit might be worth looking at as well as Kenyon in the mid-west, maybe Macalester (though it is urban as well as being out of his preferred geographic area)?
A few ideas (staying away from urban, large, and/or pure arts schools. Snowboarding will be really limiting, as is non-urban): Syracuse (is 15K undergrads too large?), Loyola Marymount, U Miami, Hofstra, Pepperdine, RIT.
Are LACs with film studies majors ok or is production focus necessary?
Kenyon and Oberlin were initially possibilities but he doesn’t want to attend a school in a state that doesn’t grant his professors-with-a-uterus full rights and bodily autonomy, so they are out.
I’m glad you mentioned Clark–it’s been on my radar but I wasn’t sure. Occidental is a great option! He’s spent lots of time working in LA and loves it.
Don’t know the school as well as others but see if this fits.
I thought Kalamazoo too as they’ve put out some industry talent. It’s not in your geography but it is a state I think will protect rights. Didn’t see a program there though. You might look Not sure of the student vibe at there or Clark. Thx
I think Skidmore’s program is just an interdisciplinary minor. I don’t see a film major there (it was recently removed from our list for this reason).
Stevenson University in Maryland. Very nice School of Design with a Film/Media Major and snow in the winter. New-ish campus with a lot of state of the art equipment and the dorms were named some of the best in the country.
