This sight has been so much help that I thought that I would ask for some more. We recently visited Loyola (MD), McDaniel, Goucher, and Mary Washington. He really liked McDaniel. He liked the layout of the campus and the feel of the student body. This is his #1 school at this point.

He also liked Mary Washington and Loyola, but thought that Loyola might be too "athletic' for him and wasn't sure he would fit in.

So the question is... any suggestions for other schools that would have similiar campuses and student bodies to McDaniel? We aren't looking for name brand. (He has a 3.1/3.2 GPA and a 30 ACT) We're looking for schools that he has a decent shot of getting into with that GPA.

Thanks for the help!

Of the hundred or so schools we’ve visited with our two daughters, I’d say Elon (NC), StoneHill (MA) and Quinnipiac (CT) were closest as far as campus similarity. As for student similarity, I’d recommend looking at some schools in southeastern PA. There are dozens of course, ranging from Muhlenberg to Gettysburg.

Newhope, you must be angelic to have visited on hundred schools or have many kids who are very different. Either that or you do it professionally. What got you to 100 campuses?

^ DW and I travel quite a bit, and we took advantage of that. D goes to camp – visit colleges along the way. Summer travel to grandparents – visit some more. It helped that many of the schools were concentrated in the northeast and mid-Atlantic. For longer trips we generally took one of D’s friends along. (You’d be surprised how that much easier long trips go when dear offspring doesn’t feel “trapped with parents.” Recommended!)

NewHope - I was thinking the same thing - except that I noticed you said you have two daughters, so not too many kids. Have you really visited over 100 campuses? That’s incredible! How did you find the time?

I’m impressed. For my daughter, bringing another kid along always work, as does not bringing the mom along. My son didn’t even want to visit until he’d gotten in. Why fall in love with a place with a 10% probability of admission, he thought.

I travel a ton (10 trips to London and various parts of Europe in a typical year, a few trips to various places like Mexico City, Kuala Lumpur, Melbourne, Johannesberg, Toronto). I did stay in Cambridge, UK earlier this year, but most places I go don’t have colleges I’d be looking at for my kids. New York, I guess. I was in Norwalk, CT so I guess I could have visited Yale, Conn College or UConn. Haven’t been to LA in a while. Now you’ve got me thinking.

Given my son’s plan, we did 5 visits this year (3 in April) for my son and he’s ready to head to college. Next year, I told my daughter we’ll do a US college tour and a Canadian college tour (she’s a dual citizen). Mom will likely stay behind for fireworks prevention.
