Simmons a good school for English majors?

I’m planning on being an English major/communications minor or English/Communications double major. I want to go into book publishing which isn’t something you can train in the classroom for. That’s what’s really making me second-guess Simmons: it seems to be a career-driven school, with majority of students being in nursing or accelerated pre-professional programs and there being far more grad students than undergrad even though it’s categorizes as a LAC. I’ve been accepted into the honors program so I would get higher-level classes, but would Simmons a) provide a well-rounded liberal arts education and b) be a good fit for a student whose dream career doesn’t have a set path to take?

Yes to both.

As a former English major, it’s not the school I would pick. If you wanted to study a more vocational subject, sure.

Have either of you attended simmons? I’m deciding among simmons, mount holyoke, and bryn mawr and i’m scared out of my mind that i won’t make the right choice.

I worked in textbook publishing for over 20 years. Most of the folks with whom I worked had liberal arts degrees from elite LACs. Since book publishing is a field that really isn’t growing and you’re not certain that you of what you want to do, I would look for a college that provides a strong liberal arts background. IMO Simmons probably isn’t the best place–I would take a closer look at Bryn Mawr or Mount Holyoke. Both of them are stronger academically. Have you visited all of the schools? If not, do so. Also, find out about the possibility of internships in the publishing field. Plus, both of them are part of a consortium (Five Colleges for MHC and Tri-co for BMC) that would allow you to take classes outside of the college. At BMC you can also take courses at Penn (it’s a little more difficult, but not impossible).

I am currently a Simmons Student! I am happy to answer any questions you have regarding Simmons.
