Simons Research Program 2016

Never mind, it seems as if they’ve updated the webpage since yesterday.

@picats3141 where did you find the update? All I can find right now is the alumni/mentors/research areas

why can’t the deadline be pushed back like a week xD

^ why do you need the deadline to be pushed back? Isn’t it Jan 20th? Just wanted to make sure that I am not missing something… :slight_smile:

@coffeeaddicted http://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/simons/intel.html

This has the names of the projects, so it at least gives you an idea

@4beardolls that’s what I thought, Jan. 20

Are you guys planning on sending in your SAT/ACT scores? On the application it only asks for PSAT if you’ve taken it. And I’m worried that my ACT score would just hurt my chance of getting in because I know I could’ve done better

Anyone else wanna post stats?

@4beardolls more time for my teachers to do recs, given that I’ll be asking them this monday lol

@runna67 I’m sending in my SAT scores because I don’t know if I did very well on this year’s new PSAT format

If you don’t mind sharing, what did you get on the SAT? I’m trying to decide if I should send in my ACT

I got a 2330

Does anyone know how you can prearrange for a mentor? Does that help?

Yes, it helps. Try contacting mentors and ask if they’ll work with you. You should put together a compelling argument why they should though.

@Falcon1 Thanks! Do you know where I can find a list of them and their fields of research?

I see you tried to post a comment on the RSI thread but deleted it. If it was to ask about mentors, then no, you can’t prearrange mentors at RSI.

You have to hunt around Simons’ website to find the mentors and their research interests. it’s all there. You can even find actual research abstracts I believe from past participants and their mentors but you have to search for them.

Don’t just put all your eggs in the RSI or Simons baskets. There are at least a dozen other interesting research programs depending on your area of interest. Also, try contacting professors directly in your area of interest at universities to see if they’ll work with you. RSI , Clark, Simons, Garcia etc are all hard to get into so have a backup [plan. Good luck!

I already lined up a mentor at stony brook in the event that I get in, based on past applicants, how does that help in the admissions process for the summer program?

how are you guys fitting in all your ECs into that one 5 sent short answer question? it seems so small…

@mochilate1897 i think u have a very good chance of getting in considering u have done previous research and uve already lined up a mentor. ofc, having those things doesnt guarantee anything, but it will def help u.

do u think that not having any previous research experience will hurt me? ive heard there are a decent amount of kids at simons who go in w/o previous experience

@Dfalcon123 I was just concise and listed my most important ones…also I’m fairly sure having no research experience will probably hurt (I don’t have any either)
