So I suppose it is now high time for a 2014 thread for the Simons program. Post away!

LOL you hijacked my previous thread for the Simons Research Program discussion. (It’s ok )
I heard that grades aren’t the most important factors in determining whether you get in or not. Either way, good luck to all!

What did you guys put down for your essay? (The last one)

Decisions will be out in the next 1-2 weeks, who else has applied?

Well, me. If this is everyone I guess we’ll all have a good chance to get in lol

I applied too!

Anyone want to post stats?

And what research areas did you guys put on your app?

Have you contacted any professors?

What was your essay topic (about a problem you’d like to see solved)?

Wow 7 posts, 300+ views…

I put Neurobiology first.
I have a 4.0 GPA (weighted 4.33?), Ranked in top 10/~600
Math Team, Science Olympiad, Job, online courses, play an instrument, good essay
I don’t have any previous research experience so idk if I have a chance.
My school applied who is ranked higher than me but I have stronger ECs. Hopefully they care more about ECs and the essays than grades.

What are your stats?

The views/posts is weird, yeah. Once decisions are released I think people will start posting.

I put Biology with emphasis on medicine + genetics (can’t remember specific subfields that were on the app).

5.0/5.33 Weighted, 4.0 or so unweighted, 5/~320, should be finishing an Associate Degree at my Community College by high school graduation, I’ve finished my graduation requirements this year, 36 ACT, 2370 SAT, I took like…8… SAT Subject IIs, 800 in 5 of those I think.

8 APs junior year, 3 (idk maybe 4 if you count Calc BC as being both AB and BC) sophomore year.

Uhh ECs… debate captain, LD debate, Eagle Scout, Academic Challenge is having a good year, I have service hours etc. (not many).

I think GPA is my weakest point by I think rigor of course-load makes up for it.

This is just what I see on my resume which I sent in. What’s on the app was different I believe.

wow nice stats. I don’t think my transcript showed my sat scores. we didn’t need to send them right?
im in 4 APs now but i haven’t taken any AP exams yet…

There was space on the application for test scores, right? So I don’t think anything official is needed beyond that.

And I have no prior experience as well.

Ok, here are my stats, copying turgid:
I also applied for a project on genetics and biology but also hinted at a potential physics-related project in my application. idk
4.0 uw, 4.3 w cumulative (AP’s count as +1 each class), 2 APs sophomore year and 5 APs junior year
2320 single sitting 2400 superscore, should’ve taken SAT IIs I realize now, last year I could’ve done math 2 and bio e…
5 AP Bio 5 APUSH
Tennis captain, science olympiad hopefully becoming captain, nhs hopeful vp, piano, about 130 service hours, head of a free standardized test class at my school

So…unless they like my essay, I have virtually no chance…

Well i don’t know we all seem kinda equal anyways, its gonna be the essay that pushes any of us over

Have any of you been in contact with professors? I have and have good reason to believe I am accepted as a result. I think the essay certainly helps since I think the admissions process relies heavily on Professor input as they look over your file.

Err, well, no and I kind of regret that. Is it too late to do that?

I havent talked to any professors…
Has anyone got an interview, and for which research area?

Oh yeah, I don’t remember putting test scores in, but if I did, i put my PSAT which was a 230

I don’t remember there is a place in the form to put test scores.
Also, how do you take more than 7 AP classes from school? There are only 7 periods per day in my son’s school, and one of the AP’s takes 2 periods.

Lol I only get 6 periods per day…awk

some schools like mine have a 4/4 system where we have 2 semesters of 4 classes each so we finish 8 classes per year.
