Simple question about housing

I live 15 minutes away (in traffic) from U Chicago. Would I still be required to live on campus?

Yes. 10char

For your first year, yes.

khh594, an official answer: all first year students are required to live on-campus. If cost is a concern, remember that your financial aid package takes the cost of on-campus housing as part of the total cost of attending UChicago. After first year, you would be welcome to move back home if you wished to do so.

Yes, cost was one concern, and it just seems odd to be required to live on campus when my house is barely off campus. Are you sure there isn’t an exception? How many students from Chicago or the Chicagoland area actually attend the school?

How many times do you want us to tell you that you have to live on campus? The University finds that dorm life is an integral part of the formation of the student and requires first-years to experience it, no exceptions.

My tour guide gave me a different answer than you guys have, thats why I asked for some clarification. I’m sure not many people that live within 5 miles of U Chi attend the University every year, so I could see reason for an exception.

No need to be a smarta**

I know people who live well within 5 miles of UChicago and they went ahead and stayed on campus… so I assume there isn’t an exception, but am definitely not sure.

In the past we had a program for commuter students; this program was discontinued in 2007, and may have been the source of confusion for your tour guide. All first-year students are required to live on campus, regardless of how close their family lives to campus; we really feel that living in the community of the House System is essential to the UChicago experience, and want everyone to have access to the activities and community housing offers.

You are able to move off campus (and back home, if you wish) after your first year, but there are not exceptions for the first-year requirement except in extreme circumstances (for example, if have children), but such exceptions are few and far between and would be handled through the housing office.
