This sounds like an amazing opportunity because the topics are exactly what I want to study. What I've gathered from browsing the SIMR 2010 thread is that the essays are quite important, which is awesome, 'cause I love writing like no other, and which also means I should get started on them :)

I am going to start on my application today. I live in Southern California and I am really interested in the program. Are there students every summer who apply but do not live in Northern California?. If I get in, my parents plan to rent a place for 2 months so that I can attend the program. It will be expensive but in the long run, it will be worth it. I have always wanted to do some kind of science research and I am looking forward to applying to SIMR. Is this a hard program to get in like the RSI? I applied to RSI and also I am applying to one program at Cal State–Fullerton but from reading about this program, I think it is the best although it is not free like the RSI.

I’m applying! MAYBE. i have a pretty perfect transcript and a kickass grade in AP bio, but my SAT score is pathetic. i’m talking wince-worthy. however, i do have some really unique extra cir. activities and i think my essays are pretty good. idk do you think i should bother applying? i heard it’s numbers based. and even if the essays do a lot for me, i dont know if they’ll be enough to help them overlook my poor sat score. plus, i heard there might be an initial cut off. like they dont even read essays & see the rest of your app if you dont surpass a certain score & gpa

I have no idea about what they look at when accepting students.

On the online registration it asks at the very beginning for your GPA (4.0 scale - weighted) as well as our GPA (4.0 scale - unweighted). This may seem like a dumb question but aren’t these the same? Or can my weighted GPA be higher because my school records honors and ap classes as 5.0 meaning my GPA is more like 4.8 weighted? This doesn’t make sense to me. Essentially I have a 4.8 weighted and a 4.0 unweighted. Do I just put that? Or both 4.0?

You are right. that does not make sense. We should ask them. I am loking forward to this research program. We need to hear from someone who has attended it. Is it a very good program? How does it compare to RSI?

I’m glad that I am not the only one confused. As for comparison to RSI- I have heard that RSI is the best. For me though I would love going to either

I’ve been told both yes and no. I personally think adding a title for such essays is not necessary unless your essay is three pages or something (which is tl;dr for the selection committee, anyway).

Mailed my app yesterday. I think the acceptance rate is something around 40-45 students (which is what it says on the website) out of approximately 200 applicants, which is not bad.

I’m applying! I just got my february ACT scores back though, and my science went from a 29 to a 36. Do you think they’ll mind if I send an updated test score, since it’s such a significant increase? My SAT score is only okay (2120) and I don’t have subject tests yet, so I thought it was an important indicator of my abilities.

kja;lkdjf I totally just saw this post ! I submitted my application on Friday and totally procrastinated on it I spent FOREVER cutting down my essays. I"m pretty sure that there was not a single adjective remaining in those two pages. My SAT score is EH, it’s not bad but it’s nothing to rejoice over. My best friend and I learned that the other one was applying three days before the deadline. Ahhahahaha. I’m so nervous !
