Since you have to decide by May 1...

To the three moms, congratulations to your children! My sophomore loves MIT, and except for the two times a year we pay the tuition, my husband and I love it too. There are a few other MIT parents that post here so we'll be glad to answer any questions from that perspective.

BTW, son's East Campus dorm room is so warm in the winter he always keeps his window open, so you may not need that space heater. He does have a window unit (someone was getting rid of it so the price of free was nice), but he hasn't really needed it so hasn't installed it yet. He is staying on campus for summer so he may need it then.

Congratulations to everyone who's made that big decision, and welcome to MIT, everyone who's decided on coming! (And we all love you, Mollie, thanks for everything.)

I'll second over30's offer to answer parental Qs. My son lives in East Campus also (although not on the same floor as over30's :) ); he, too, got a window A/C off the Reuse list but hasn't needed it yet (nor has he needed a space heater). I suspect that sort of thing is easy to find if you keep your eyes open and are willing to tinker a little if it doesn't work quite perfectly.

Yeah, I should have mentioned that I am always cold, and that's the major reason I need a space heater. My dorm room is on the east face of the building, so it's actually quite toasty in the mornings. I use the space heater anyway.

I predict, having lived in Boston for two summers now, that all the AC units will go into use like clockwork the second week of June. :)

Ok, so this isn't really a decision question (I've already sent in my forms) but...is there any chance that MIT will rescind their offer if I get a C in physics (A's and B's in everything else)? I was absent for a week and it really screwed me over.

I'm also curious about what kind of decline would be needed to risk getting my admission rescinded. I'm about ready to tell my Lit teacher to go efff herself... I'm trying to study for seven APs and she thinks her classwork should be my #1 priority.

same thing here, i hope my slacking off this semester will not make MIT rescind me! I'm a straight A's student, and now, two B's :(

I suspect that if you can proffer a reasonable explanation, you will be fine. Mostly what happens if you slack off (so far as I know) is that you will get a letter from Marilee Jones that will a) scare the living jesus out of you and b) make you feel like you have disappointed the Pope or other suitable religious authority.

Do the dorm rooms have a/c units? Also is there a Target or Walmart in the area? I really don't want DD to pack a bunch of towels and such if we can get them nearby.

I'm going to be selfish a moment, and ask a case-specific question. I used to have straight A's and all 5's on my AP's. This semester, I will have a B, likely not do well on AP's, i.e.
2 or 3 on Lang and Comp (took cold)
4 or 5 on Lit and Comp
Won't take Chem despite having taken the class and mentioning I planned to on my app
5 on World
5 on Psych

However, I'm not slacking off. The reason I have all these problems is because of the ~30 school days I missed this semester because of Intel STS, JSHS, various other competitions, and ISEF in the future. Am I in trouble?
