i know a friend who got admitted to amherst. but he’s currently serving NS so he will be class of 2016.

hey guys, newbie here:) found this thread and its been extremely helpful so far just that i’m lazy to go through all 254 pages considering it started decades ago.

i’m sitting for ‘O levels’ next year and i know that the minimum requirement to at least get in a U in US is 5 passes. i intend to take SATS and then apply for college, however i’m worried i wont be able to score well because of my limited knowledge… the subjects i’m taking are not really* that academically inclined - emaths w/o a maths, combined science (phy/chem), combined humans (geog/ss), poa and design tech. so do you suggest i take SAT II for maths, physics, chem, geog? i’m not looking at ivy league or elite schools, but schools like kansas state, tulane etc etc. i just want a change of lifestyle.

also, after taking my results, how do i, say, defer from the standard “JAE” posting? tia:)

I guess you can take those subjects for SAT II. However, some of the stuff that may be tested are not taught at O Levels but are taught at A Levels. But you don’t have to worry, I don’t think it is alot.

Also, the topics they test you in SAT II are very broad. So, I suggest you look through the topics tested in the different subjects and choose the subject which you are more confident in scoring in.

Just my opinion. Hahah. I am no expert :D

Oh hi Trelawney and all,

I got into Amherst but am seriously considering not going there, mainly due to its lack of an engineering program and that I got a merit-based full scholarship to attend a reputable big research university, where I can get a Master of Engineering in four-years.

But considering that Amherst has a close-knit community with excellent faculty members, should I just abandon taking the specialized engineering program for a liberal arts education, especially because I have no prior engineering background and can’t predict how much interest I really have in engineering…

Can anyone advice me please??!!

And tell me about the name recognition of Amherst College in Singapore?

iamnicolle: thanks for your advice!
i just realized theres no sat geog. lol!

if anyone knows, how do students exempt from JAE posting? like example maybe resting for 1 year before moving on, or going to a private college etc etc.

you just don’t do anything. meaning don’t sign in to the JAE website at all. there IS a deadline. they’ll just assume you’re not interested in continuing your studies if you don’t meet that deadline.

ps you sure you can cope with university edu after O levels ?

iamhopeful: Congratulations on getting in Amherst! I think LACs in general are not well-known in Singapore. From my impression, most people only have heard of Ivies, Stanford, MIT and other big names while the men on the street only know Harvard! However, Amherst (together with Williams Swat Middlebury etc) is very well-regarded among applicants to LACs and among academic circles in the US. I will wholeheartedly support your decision to attend Amherst!
Don’t let people’s ignorance discourage you. I’m also heading to an LAC this fall.

hopefully. there are other people doing this as well right? @.@ i may go to jc but still, i would prefer otherwise so as to graduate faster

Hey plushelle, actually, for most of the schools you want to apply to, they don’t require SAT II. The SAT reasoning test is sufficient. Oh, I’m also one of those people who applied with just O levels :)

Amherst is a great school. I got rejected though.
So in my totally biases opinion, I would choose Amherst provided you got a sizeable scholarship cos a full scholarship does sound like a pretty good deal. What is the most important thing you want from your education? Good luck with your decision.

LAC ftw. :)

kimichi: hey thanks! cool i’m not alone heehee =) which U are you in?

@ Iamhopeful.

Amherst is awesome. Reputation is definitely not a problem, unless you choose to work for super small company with a lousy HR department. Still, just draw out a few rankings and people will be convinced. I doubt that people who have not heard of Amherst will know any schools outside the big 5 (HYPSM), and perhaps, a few schools that a LOT of Singaporeans go to (but who wants to go abroad to stay in the little red bubble?).

About engineering::

The College does have some arrangements with other institutions (although they are not advertised in the College literature) which permit Amherst students to take a year away from Amherst College (akin to a junior year abroad) to study engineering. For example, Amherst College students can take their junior or senior year at Dartmouth College, graduate from Amherst with an Amherst College BA, and then complete one more year at Dartmouth College to obtain a Bachelors of Science in Engineering from Dartmouth.

information from [Info for students interested in engineering](Info for students interested in engineering)

Not sure how that works for internationals though, or financial aid.

I would not come here for engineering though. But I would definitely come here if you are unsure about what you want to do.

Amherst is an amazing school and my friends there are enjoying it a lot. The atmosphere of a small college (I go to a small Engineering LAC) is completely different from that of a big university. You could always go to grad school at that uni, but the undergrad experience is not to be missed =)

plushelle: The University of Oregon, class of '14

anyone planning to head back to sg after you are done with uni?

@fiona, Singaporeans at Amherst?

Bao Viet? and you
and future amhersties…

Hi Fiona and Nadash,

Thanks for the great reply. I guess I am really undecided about my major, and going Amherst might suit me better after all.

Nadash, are you studying at Amherst. Is the engineering program open for students, since it’s unofficial?

Yeah, I am. Hm…I don’t think its unofficial, just unadvertised, so it should be open to students. But in all honesty, I know as little about it as you–all my info is from the website. Ah yes, Bao. Hahahahaha…

@novaris: haha nope, not me
