Hi fellows! Just wanna double check the IMPORTANT AIRPORT DOCUMENTS:

-passport
-three-page-long I-20 form

anything else?

Something personal that isn’t reflected in other parts of your application but makes sense when read together.

Admit letter

Some cash

Thanks Frank! Admission letter? At the airport? I guess I could bring a copy of it…

Hello, my second time posting here =) Thanks for the reply earlier.

Anyways, I asked previously about whether I have to send in all my school examination grades and quite a number of people told me that I only have to send in my O-level Final Result (9-10 Grade), J1 Final Year Grades, J2 Preliminary Examination Grades, Predicted Grades, and IB Final grades.

I really appreciate the replies, but I really really really want to make sure that this is the case.
So I was thinking about calling or mailing the admission officers in each university to ask them directly. Do you guys think this is a good idea? Or am I unnecessarily calling their attention to the fact that I don’t want them to see some of my examination grades?

go4yale: probably no harm calling, it’s not like they’re going to record down your name. but sending those sounds like more than enough to me. most colleges don’t even ask for all those grades – I merely sent in my IP and A level ones.

@go4yale: I see no point in calling them. You can just talk to the school councilor and ask/explain to them that u only need to submit those grades. I think o level/promo/prelim/predicted/Ib final is more than enough

Happy national day everyone. :)

aerogel: Wait… does that mean I don’t have to send in my J1 scores? How about Prelim scores? And since my school doesn’t have a transcript per se,does that mean I only need to send in certified true copies of my school report?

go4yale: I can only tell you what worked for me… but yes, I don’t think J1/prelim scores are necessary.

have you tried requesting a transcript from the admin office? iirc my school didn’t print one for every student, but you could get them upon request… otherwise yeah a certified true copy should suffice.

A question about the Common App:

I’m intending to apply for Early Decision this year, if I get rejected/waitlisted/etc I intend to apply for other schools as well. However, if the schools won’t hold a place for 2 years (due to NS) do I have to fill in a completely new application in my second year of NS or can I reuse the previous application?

I think your guys’ country is very clean and Singapore Airlines is the best airline out of all the other Asian airlines.

@Truffliepuff: Wow, thanks. SIA rocks. Though I have to say there are lots of great Asian airlines - if you look at the top 10 airlines in the Skytrax 2010 awards, every single one of them is Asian or Oz/NZ. Interesting.

(I’ve flown Asiana and it’s not better than SIA)

SIA is great, but its wayy overpriced.

I think you have to fill in a completely new application since the Common Application website deletes applications when they re-launch the site each July/August. I am not sure whether you can use your old essays though - you might need to email each school for clarification.

Hi Guys, Im torn between NYU Stern and Columbia for ED? Do you guys know how much harder to get into Columbia than Stern? Thanks. Im not applying aid anyway

If you are talking about Columbia College, quite a bit harder I think.

Airport procedures

Hi experienced flyers, I would just like to clarify the procedure of flying from Singapore to USA. If there is a site that clearly explains this (I’m sure there is, I just couldn’t find it), please link it here.

So what do we need to do in Singapore? Flash I-20 form along with passport? Show extra proof of being a legitimate student by flashing your admission letter if asked?

On the plane? Fill up a small card with your details, I’ve heard? Hold on to this card when you land cos it’s important?

Upon arriving in USA? Go to immigration to… get your I-20 stamped? WHAT HAPPENS in USA?

Please help!

Add to that, first time I’m using my new biometrics passport :0

Airline check-in staff will verify that you can actually enter the US by checking your passport for a valid visa and your I-20. If anyone is travelling with you under a Visa Waiver Program, remember to fill out an ESTA form (at [U.S</a>. Customs and Border Protection - Travel](http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/id_visa/esta/)) at least 72 hours before departure.

You will be asked to fill up an I-94 card on the plane. Make sure you fill in the correct version (white), the green version is for VWP travellers. (See http://amsterdam.usconsulate.gov/uploads/images/YCmGtsXw2N2-SQS8luJXMA/I-94_front.jpg</a> for how the card looks)

Upon arriving in the US, you will have your passport, I-20 and I-94 to the border official, and you will be fingerprinted and photographed. They will stamp your passport and retain the top half of the I-94. You get to keep your passport, I-20 and the bottom half of the I-94.

After that, you will need to report to the international students’ office at your college (usually on the 1st day of international orientation) with your documents for them to verify that you have arrived and enter that into the SEVIS database.

When you depart from the US, you will need to get your I-20 signed by someone at the international students’ office (if you are intending to return to the US) and you will return the bottom half of your I-94 to the airline check-in staff. The US doesn’t have strict exit immigration controls.

Thanks for your replies so far, Frank.

I have another question for you or anybody else who can answer it.

I want to apply for ED at Dartmouth. The closing date for submission of most of the relevant info is Nov 1, it seems they have some leeway for the tests taken in early Nov, however, some of the SAT subject tests I want to take are available only in December (World History and Latin). My other subject test will be in November as well (Japanese with listening)

If anyone has tried applying ED before, do you know if they will accept results from December?

Since EA/ED results come out by December 15th and your score is not released until about 3 to 5 days before Christmas it will not be possible for them to consider your December SAT results.

That said, they will consider your December if you are deferred into the Regular Decision round.

which nice soul would be willing to read my common apps and tell me if its too cliched?
