My caffeine-addicted daughter is planning to buy a Keurig single cup coffee maker for her room. I haven’t been able to find any definitive information to see whether it would be allowed or not. I have read that “coffee pots” are not allowed, and also no items with an exposed heating area. The Keurig does not have a pot and heats the water internally, then dispenses it into a cup. The entire exterior remains cool. I tried calling the Department of Community Living, but the woman I spoke with said she has no idea. Apparently, the only person she could think of who might know is on vacation for another week. Any students or parents with the answer? Thanks very much.

I lived in North Quad-Cable Hall my freshman year and I used my Hamilton Beach 40870 10 Cup Electric Kettle all the time to make instant coffee and tea. I think the single cup coffee maker will be fine as long as it does not set off the fire alarm. I have even seen people use rice cookers in the dorms (they use it in the lounge or very far from the smoke alarm detector).

Technically, coffee makers are not allowed. However, no one is going to notice

I would suggest hiding it in a drawer over winter break when the CAs do inspections, just in case she has a particularly strict CA. Otherwise, she should be fine.
