While I know the vast majority of freshmen are not in single dorms, is it possible for a freshman to have a single while remaining in the CMU housing system, and if so, does anyone have tips?

Also, is parking available off-campus for freshman? I have a car that I want to use occasionally for long distance traveling, but CMU doesn't grant parking for freshmen.

Yes, it is possible to get a single as a freshman. When you fill out your housing application, put Mudge and Morewood as your top choices for buildings and single as your top preference. You won’t likely get one, but I do have 2 friends this year that did this and have singles as freshmen. (One in Mudge, one in Morewood) Remember that housing preference for freshmen is by date your housing deposit was turned in to the school, SO GET ON THAT!

Also, word of advice from a Mudge freshman, prime double in Mudge should be your second choice if you already have the cash to shell out for a single. The rooms are really nice.

As for parking, you can probably pay to get a permanent spot in a parking garage in Oakland or Shadyside, but the school definitely doesn’t provide any type of off-campus parking service (and if they did, they definitely wouldn’t give any of it to freshmen) Also, if you are leaving your car in a garage for extended periods of time, it had better be a safe place, because it’ll definitely get broken into if it’s just sitting there for weeks at a time.

Unless I’m mistaken, the only way to get a single in Mudge is to either have a documented mental illness/condition that merits living alone OR to be filling in a single when there aren’t enough Mentors to fill them. However, the Mentor process this year was very competitive, so I don’t think there will be singles available.

Morewood-- yeah, you might get a single, but if you’re a Regular Decision acceptee your chances are extremely low (like 2-3% low). All of the upperclassmen get to pick the singles first, and singles are very highly prized, so the only place there will be available singles is in Morewood E-Tower (freshmen only.) Then you have to factor in that there will be ED I and ED II kids picking first, and someone will probably snag those singles at that point.

Mark it down as first choice, but don’t bank on it. Have a backup plan. Like Tyralis said, doubles in Mudge are great, and doubles in Morewood/Morewood E are also nice.

On the other side of campus, I really liked my double in Donner. They were huge rooms and you didn’t even have to worry about crossing Forbes in the morning when you stumble off to your 8:30 AM recitation.
