What are the chances of getting a single dorm at Yale as a freshman? I wouldn't mind a rommate, but I'd prefer a single.

You could get a single room as part of a suite. It's pretty much luck, though. From the comments on this board, it sounds like kids have already been placed in dorms, and roomate decisions have been made. (See thread about residential colleges.) The college placements and room assignments are made at the same time.

Well, it depends on which Old Campus dorm you're placed into. My entryway in Bingham had two types of suites of seven:

A) 3 doubles and 1 single
B) 2 doubles and 3 singles

However, my friends in LW all had doubles as far as I can remember.

If you get placed in a suite, do you get assigned your room or can you "claim" a room w/in a suite based on who gets to the room first? Can you bargain with your roommates for a single w/in the suite, even if you "technically" got assigned a roommate.

When you're placed into a suite, you are also assigned a room randomly. Thus, if you are assigned a double, your roommate is chosen for you (I assume based on the rooming preferences that you indicate in the housing forms).

Technically, switching rooms during the year is not allowed and supposedly could result in some hefty fines, yadda yadda. However, it's a practice that is not at all uncommon. I know of one person who apparently paid his suitemates to have a single all year... But usually, it's not that extreme.

Just wait for the end-of-the-semester housing drama... Oh, man...

All of my roomates and I are catagorized under LW B11. Does this mean we will figure out who gets what room when we move in or will there be assigned rooms when we get there?

by the way... if you're in Morse (I'm not, but a friend is), almost everybody has singles, including freshmen

I don't think that's quite true. I stayed in Durfee with some Morse people for Bulldog Days, and the suite I stayed in had two doubles and three singles. I would imagine that it's like that for the entire hall.

i'm a '09. i'm in morse. i'm in a single (w/ a walk in closet)

im in trumbull '09 w/a single

I'm in Trumbull '09 w/ a single too!

i have a single in stiles--->lawrance hall

athlonmj -- how do you know you have a single? how can you tell from the sheet we got?

if there isn't anyone else in the same room as you, then you're in a single

for Durfee, BCD are singels, A and E are doubles
