I'm just wondering, is it hard to get a single dorm as a freshman, or does it just depend on the school? Thanks in advance.

It really depends on the school. In general, it's hard as a freshman and easier as you get older. Then again, there are some private LACs where 70% of the freshman rooms are singles.

I am definitely getting a single next year. It's nice to have the roommate experience or whatever, and my roomie's a really polite, agreeable guy, but still, it would be nice to turn off the lights whenever I want, not wear headphones if I don't want to, set the alarm for any time, have my room in any condition without p.o.ing my roommate, not have to have people I don't know in my room in odd hours, not have to worry about an unscrupulous friend of the roommate damaging something. And then there's the whole privacy thing. I miss having my own room.
But it depends how the dorms are set up, as quare said. At some places, like Chicago, entire dorms are mostly singles. A lot of people here requested doubles.

Yea, it really depends on the school and/or specific dorm. Last year in my freshman year, they just put me in a single by chance. To be honest, it wasnt all that great. Its much harder to meet people and if you have a roommate you'll have someone to hang with the first few days. Of course there are downsides as well, like lack of privacy and more noise, so there are good points to singles but also benefits of having a roommate.

i'm in a single. my hall is mostly doubles though. i move in in 5 days so hopefully i'll be able to make some friends during orientation. i just plan to leave my door open as much as possible. Luckily my room is at the beginning of the hall so i'll be able to see people come and go, giving me the opportunity to try and make conversation.

I got a single my freshman year. For me, it was more like the first few weeks sucked cos i didn't know anyone (the fact that my suite was all upperclassmen didn't help), but later on in the year it got a lot better and such
