Single in the dorms?

Hey I was just wondering... is there any chance to get a single room in the dorms? I think I'd be best off w/o a roommate...

Unless you're a junior transfer or very lucky Regent's Scholar, you're looking at no chance living in a single.

Unless if you're a junior, they won't even bother to assign you one. So if you're an incoming freshman, forget it.

having a roomate is fun! well privacy is another thing ;)

The fact is that the dorms simply don't have any freaking singles. The school needs to cram as many students in as possible, and many singles have been converted to doubles and triples since the housing guarantee for incoming freshmen was extended from 1 year to 2 years. I put singles as my top four choices on my housing application and I didn't get one. If this is really an issue for you, I'd suggest looking for an apartment over the summer. You can get a studio or a multi-room apartment shared among your friends. No one forces you to live in the dorms your first year, even though a majority of students do. Another way to get a single is to become a resident assistant, but you need to have lived with a roommate for one year in the dorms before you can apply to be one. The application is as long as the one to get into the UC itself (three essay questions), and the selection process is very competitive. If you make it in, you'll get a single room and board for free but you'll have some responsibilities such as night-patrolling and staff meetings, which can take up quite some time.

Foothill has some singles=reserved for upper division students.

There are also singles in the units, and I've heard at Clark Kerr. Basically, singles are reserved for students with medical reasons for using them. I don't think being an upperdivision student or a Regents scholar helps much in front of that. The chances of getting a single for a student without medical need and without being an RA are pretty slim.
