Single in the Quad?

Hi,

So i'm a Penn 2013 looking at rooming, and I definitely want to get a room in the quad next year, and while I'd def. prefer a 2-bedroom double or 3-bedroom triple, they don't exist in the quad (i think? can anybody correct me on this?).

anyway, in that case, i was wondering if anybody could help me decide whether or not i want to live in a single, double, or triple next year, and in which house, if there are any differences (I was thinking Ware). would living in a single hamper my social life in any way? and how would a triple compare to a double?

thanksss!

There are singles, doubles, and triples in the Quad houses. I think that singles are the least requested so that might be your best bet.

But I’m also a member of the class of 2013 so I can’t help you with the social aspect.

hi, im a freshman now, and i live in a single ware college house (part of the quad).

the social aspect is definitely a plus esp. for freshman. most of the clubs etc. put posters in the quad to attract freshman and it gets you involved. plus, its where most of the freshman are so its a good place to meet fellow classmen.

there are definitely singles, doubles, and triples. if you do research, you will see that all doubles and most triples are not suit style and are single room. translation - you will share a room with another person. so, you could be best buddies with this other person, or you two might be complete opposites. i chose not to take the risk but thats your choice. i also chose a single so that when i need to study, i would have a place to.

im not sure how difficult it is to get into the quad since i got my first choice. i do have friends who ddnt get into the quad too.

it is important to consider also that the sizes of rooms in the quad vary widely. i would suggest applying to ware or fisher since they are known to have the bigger rooms overall. its a matter of chance though. ware also has advantages because most of its rooms have sinks, which i find very nice.

anyway, i hope that helped! :)

hey yeah thanks, that did help – i’m gonna def try for a room in the quad next year.

but can anyone tell me if getting a single hampers one’s social life? that’s my main worry.

yeah same here. I would definitely take a single. Because I really value my privacy and being able to be alone to study/relax, but I’m worried it will hamper my social life and I will lose the opportunity to make a lot of really close friends.

The singles are smaller than you think. Also, the quad has rats (or huge mice?), roaches, and giant millipede things…if I could do it over I’d live in Hill, yeah there’s no AC but the halls are set up better and you dont have to go outside in the freezing cold to go eat.

hahaha, whoever told you hill is good must have really liked it. it is a nice community and the dining hall is nice however. hill leaks, when it rains too much the halls sometimes flood. hill has rodent problems as well as pest problems. hill also has ridiculously small rooms. so unless you want to be living in a single sized double next year, hill would not be a good choice. as for the air conditioning, you have no idea how handy it will become until you get here. i had friends from hill sleep over the first few months because it was so hot they couldnt sleep. hill was the original women’s dorm. the building looks like a prison. if anything, id say the quad is great for socializing, having a single just means you go to your neighbor’s room to hang out, no biggie. its nicer because you have your space when you want to study. so, my advice is, definitely dont apply for hill, and the quad is pretty nice, rooms can vary but the social atmosphere is good.

Is it true about what #nineteen said about the quad that it has rats, roaches and giant millipede things?? Out of fisher, ware and riepe which one is the least nosiest and have bigger rooms overall?

I know this thread is almost a year old, but a question was never answered. I also want to ask if it is true that the quad has “rats, roaches, and giant millipede things”. If anyone could respond, I would appreciate it greatly. :)

Yes, the Quad has mice and roaches. Hill has them too, but I don’t think it’s quite as bad.

Regardless of where you live in the city of Philadelphia you are going to see mice & roaches… Haha! It’s not just in the freshmen dorms.

Umm. Okay. I can stand mice, but I really really hate roaches. When I lived in NYC there were tons in the apartment, and whenever I had to go to the bathroom at night I would see them scrambling around once I turned on the light. Are there tons, or just the occasional lonely roach? Sorry if I’m being overly whiny.

I am a freshman living in the quad and I have not seen a roach yet.
