Single or double spaced?

This may be a silly question, but I can’t find a firm answer. Some people say essays should be doubled spaced, 12 size, and Times New Roman. Others say they should be single spaced with a double spaced between paragraphs. What should I do? If it varies in colleges I am applying, then I should let you know that I am applying to top 20 colleges.

Are you doing all your apps on paper? Sometimes if you have to input it online into a text field it doesn't give you much choice.

I would go with single spaced. You want to keep your essay to one page, because two pages makes it seem too long and you run the risk of the second page getting lost. One page, single spaced gives you about 600 words, which is good for most college essays.

Double space is for papers, and college essays are more like personal statements. This is what my gc told me; she also said that you don't need a title for your essays.

Unless the college expressly tells you the spacing required, you can do what you want. Double space is somewhat easier and quicker to read than single; a possible compromise is 1 1/2 space. If you single space, it is advisable (but not required) to have one space between paragraphs simply to make the reading easier; if you double space it is not necessary (for ease of reading) unless you are not identing the beginning of the paragraph.
