Single parent family...how would this be viewed?

I live with my mom, and she makes roughly $50,000 a year. Now I have a brother who will be applying for the class of '11, and he will be attending a culinary school, so we aren't going to be able to pay much in way of tuition. We get maybe $500 from our dad a month.

My question is: would he (my dad) still be accounted for when considered for financial aid? It's barely enough to pay a bill...

And a single parent family making $50,000 a year...is that too much money to make for a three person family? My thinking would be that if you're going to charge us almost what my mom makes a year to attend your college, that would be a little excessive.

Thanks for any help that can be given.

sweetsaz, I don't know what your relationship is with your dad and what his yearly income is, but you need to know that colleges consider both parents' incomes when estimating your financial need, regardless of whether or not they live together. They feel that it is the responsibility of both parents to provide for college expenses for their kids. So the real question is, what is the combined income of both your father and mother together. You can take this information to many of the EFC calculators available on a college's website and estimate what your "expected family contribution" to your education will be/year.

Yes, I am aware of that thread. However, the woman in question has had no contribution from her ex. I tried to read as much of it as possible, but I tend to glaze over when threads get a little long.
