single parent home

Will living in a single parent home help my chances any? If it didn't I would assume they wouldn't ask for it in the application...

ha no! they just want to know what name to put on the envelope when they bill you. they could care less. it wont help.

I thought it was considered a socioeconomic disadvantage though, they can tell how to address the envelope from the information you fill out about your parents.

I know it used to be a factor in Michigans admissions, but since they were sued i guess it wouldn't be any more

I don't know where you get your information, folks. If you don't know, please don't offer up an answer and state it like it's fact. I'm glad you asked, bstoroz, but you're wrong about some things. As is totallysweet.

Yes, it can help you, because it speaks to some economic and background diversity that U-M cares about.

And no, U-M was not sued for that. Under the previous system, "socioeconomic status" (without specifying things like parental education or marital status) was a factor, although I don't think U-M has a systematic way to find that out about a candidate. But that wasn't the subject of the lawsuit, anyway.

U-M was never questioned for considering it and they still do consider it (just as they still consider race, which the Supreme Court said was okay as long as they didn't do it in the same way they used to). And now they ask about socioeconomic factors in a more direct way on the application.

Thanks hoedown..yea I wasn't sure why they were sued but since totallysweet seemed so sure of herself I kind of just assumed that might have been a factor.

That's why this place gives me high blood pressure sometimes. Sheer opinion (or guessing) stated as indisputable fact. LOL

Yea we're all ignorant :)
