I have been wondering if it is bad that I come from a single parent household and my mom did not attend college or if it is worse. A kid in my class told me that it makes me look uneducated and colleges won't want me, however, others have said that they might think differently. I am confused!!

I do not think it makes a lot of difference. If you are “first generation” (neither parent attended college), that can actually increase your attractiveness to some colleges. But generally it doesn’t make any difference. That “kid in your class” has no idea what they are talking about.

It may impact your financial aid situation, though, depending on whether your father has been in the picture at all and depending on which colleges you apply to. If he has paid child support, even irregularly, some colleges (higher ranked ones, usually) will think maybe he can pay some of your college expenses.

If you are a good student these are good things. Schools like to accept people who are first generation. As for the single parent part it will basically have no impact on you.

It isn’t an issue at all. It make a difference when you apply for scholarships and financial aid. But then its usually a benefit rather than a burden. Applications look at promise in a student. It’s typically based off GPA, EC’s, test scores and recommendations. They can’t deny you because you come from a single parent or non-college educated parents.
