Single Room?

Hi everyone!

I was recently accepted to Michigan State University. I sent in my deposit and picked my orientation date, so now onto dorms.

I am considering trying to get a single room. If I apply early enough for one, I may be able to get it. I am an only child and I really like my alone time (esp while I’m getting adjusted, but it shouldn’t be too hard). This also allows me to bring friends into the room or leave without worrying about a roommate.
I will have other friends on campus and I’m not too shy with people, so socializing shouldn’t be an issue. I plan to move in with people later in college-- I promise I won’t stay to myself the whole time (hahaha)

I did consider rooming with one of my HS friends for a while but she has become rather wishy-washy on what college she wants to go to (and, I dont think we’d be able to agree on the same dorm building due to locations of classes).

If the single room request doesn’t work out, I assume they would just default to a shared room.

What are some pros and cons of living in a single dorm? If anyone could give some insight into this, that would be wonderful.

Pros

  • Get to spend more time alone when wanted
  • More privacy
  • Likely more space
  • Set your own rules (messiness, bed time, tv, etc.)

Cons

  • Potentially more expensive
  • Potentially a smaller room
  • Not getting the “college” experience (It may be that one day when you move out you will need to live with roommates because it is more affordable)
  • It can be nice to have someone to talk to at the end of the day. I personally have an excellent relationship with my roommate (we don’t usually hang out, but we are super friendly and talk a lot).
  • You don’t know that you won’t like it until you try it
  • Won’t get to share things (food, tv, etc.)
  • I like having a roommate because it makes me feel obligated to clean up a bit, which in the end I think is a good thing.
