I am an incoming freshman who is not requesting a roommate and I was wondering if someone could tell me the pros and cons of having a single room?

There is an option on the housing app that "I would prefer to be assigned a single room. This preference is more important to than the community preference indicated above."

I'm most interested in Kenan and Cobb on North Campus...do they have singles there?

Also, on the application, how do you request that you would like to have a freshman to be your roommate?

Well off the top of my head... pros you have more space, everything to yourself, no potential arguments or conflicts with a roommate. Cons.. no friend to hang out with, could get kind of lonely with no one to talk to.

I think singles are assigned to upperclassmen first...and my understanding is freshmen usually do not get assigned a single unless there is a medical issue. If you do request a single and get one, you'll likely have to take whatever is available. North campus singles are highly desirable and usually filled before they get to sophomore and freshmen requests.

Is there a reason you are considering a single? My d, who has never shared a room or space with anyone, and was very ambivalent about the idea of doing so, has adjusted very well to having a roommate. Personally, I think it is really important for freshmen, especially those far away from home, to make that human connection.

yeah definitely do it. i think a lot of people who dont really know anyone going into college want a single. i was one of them too because i always had my own room before at home, and it feels like it would be more comfortable. but its really not the case. after living a year with a roommate, going home and having to sleep in a room alone feels really weird and i actually missed having a roommate during winter break. seriously, living in HJ or craige would be a mistake but purposefully trying to get a single would be the biggest mistake of all. at least try it out!

There is no way you'll get a single in Kenan, if one at all. If you absolutely must have a single, go for Granville, unless you have a legitimate medical condition (like migraines).

Singles are awesome, but I think it's pretty important to have a roommate your first year, even if just to find out that you were right and that it's not for you. Maybe you'll be surprised and really like your roomie!
