single rooms at Indiana

All,

I have been looking at housing options for my S who will be probably be joining Indiana this year, hoping to join the business school after the first year. I want her to go for a single room. Looking at the options, it seems that she can only be guaranteed to get a single room if she requests either of the following learing communities:

Computing (Central)

Health Sciences (Central)

Collins (NW)

She can also get a single room if she joins academic community or be a resident scholar. These options are ruled out as she doesnt want to stay in SE (academic comm) or joing the res scholar group.

So is my understanding correct that the only way to get a single room is by selecting the said 3 communities? If she wants to join say “Internation Business”, she cannot have a single room?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks…

Not true. There are singles available in lots of other dorms--and singles tend to be easy to get at Indiana. It's the doubles and suites that are difficult to get and that are overbooked.

My own son has a single in McNutt this year--and has decided to renew for next year--mostly because it is so close to the business school. (He's a business major also).

You do need to know that McNutt is a bit of a "party" dorm, though. So peace and quiet is sometimes hard to come by.

My own son studies with headphones on tuned in to "mellow" music to drown out his next door neighbor's rap music and the constant rowdiness in the hallway. He also has his own 200-watt stereo system to make a point when his neighbor's music from next door is a bit too loud.

thanks for your reply calcruzer. how did your son request for a single room? Did her rank his preference as:

Single

neighbourhood (nw, central etc)

and asked for no learning community to ensure that he got a single room?

Yes, that's exactly what he did. And he ended up with a great single room right near the main building in McNutt.

in that case, did they automatically assign him to a random learning community?

He isn't in a learning community. Being in one is optional.
