So I got into BU (yay) and was looking at housing options.

Is it possible to request a single room? I don’t really want a roommate because I personally have a very weird schedule, sometimes I’d be asleep at 9 PM sometimes I’ll be up till 5 AM etc. I just don’t want to go through the hassle of arguing etc.

I don’t care so much about private bathrooms.

There are single rooms. In the Brownstones, there is a single per floor. Hojo has singles with private bathrooms but only on the 2nd floor. You can also get a single in a suit like Shelton or Myles I believe.

No? I know some dorms with suites have single rooms, but I’ve never dormed in Shelton or Myles so I wouldn’t know. But I agree with Hanita. As a first year, your chances of getting a single are slim. Not to mention they cost a lot more than a triple or double. Why not just suck it up and get a roommate? My roommate had weird hours too but she was quiet at night so I didn’t mind. It’s not like you can make noise anyway because of quiet hours.

It is possible to check off a single request on your housing form but it definitely will not be guaranteed. Still, if you end up in a double, don’t fret. A lot of roommates have vastly different schedules. Part of the college experience is living with someone and compromising about different issues like schedules. It’s definitely possible to have one roommate go to bed earlier than the other and be quiet. If you’re in Warren, you have the option of working downstairs or in the common room too. Also, be aware that your schedule could change a lot in college. My bedtime/wake-up has changed a bunch since before I left!

Your sleeping schedule will depend on your class schedule. I used to have that kind of schedule too during the summer and even during school days I’d go to bed at like 2 AM. But then I got stuck with really early classes so I had to start going to bed earlier. Having a roommate is not a big deal as long as you learn to be considerate of the other person.

Thanks, all I wanted to know was whether or not it was possible. I don’t mind paying a little extra… I’m paying full for the college anyway, why not pay a little extra to get what I want.

I wouldn’t mind a roommate I would just prefer not having one. I’m don’t exactly like to make compromises, but I know where you guys are coming from :)

I think it’s a good experience for you. You can’t always get things the way you want, you know. That’s the point of having group projects and roommates. This way you can get along with others. It’s not that bad at all.

Odds of single room as a freshman are very low. I know some kids who got them 2nd term because they spent the fall in the Hyatt but I don’t know if they’re doing that for freshman anymore. Just transfers I think. Your odds are best in sophomore year if you are in one of the small dorms around Kenmore in your freshman year. Those are very quiet places and tend to have single rooms scattered about.
