Wow, I haven't started a thread in a while, almost forgot how to.

To those of you who have stayed on campus and were in a double, how big was it not counting the two beds (in other words, space other than the beds). I haven't seen what the doubles look like but I was in a single in Graham-Lees during the GWHS competition and my host had the bed, his desk with his laptop on it, a mini-fridge and a cabinet which held a lot of papers and his printer. With all of that, he had no room for anything else.

I really like watching tv, but if I remember the size of the room correctly, there's not enough room for even a small one. Are the doubles big enough to solve that problem? Did the single seem small just because my host wasn't very neat? Any memories would help.

Thanks!

Well, I haven't stayed overnight yet, but will def. be getting a double...

As for the TV, I highly recommend getting a TV tuner card for your PC. That saves SO many space issues. I will be using my PC as my TV, dvd player, stereo system, recording studio, and I'll be running my Xbox through it. I just hope I have enough room to fit my bass and amp!

my host had a single but still had a 36 inch tv!

Is there a TV tuner card for a iBook?

slipstream, what dorm were you in?

There seemed to be no room in my host's room for a tv like that (Graham-Lees).

Morgan, that's a great idea, I think I might just do that!

i was in graham-lees

Eiffelguy, you can't put TV tuner cards in laptops. If you end up going to W&L and get a desktop, I can install it for you. I can actually build you a desktop with a card in it that's a lot cheaper (and better) than one you could buy from any name brand... just let me know!

Actually, I don't know if I want to get a desktop, I would prefer a laptop that I can carry around and bring home easily but I would miss television.

I guess I'll figure it out this summer, I just wish I could visit my room before I move in.

slipstream, did he have room for both a TV and a computer? Maybe my host's room just looked small because he was so messy....

I am gonna build myself a new desktop, and get a small and light tablet/notebook combo to carry around to classes.

On another note, I got a good idea. My name, Morgan, is rather androgenous. It would be pretty funny to answer "female" on the housing form and run into a Eurotrip-like situation!

Alright, laptop people, here is what you can do:

If your laptop has any sort of video INPUT (S-Video, etc.) you can get a cable box. Cable --> Cable box --> Laptop --> Laptop screen.

I have decided that I'm going to buy a 24" Dell widescreen LCD with component inputs, so I can plug my Xbox directly into it. TV will still be via a TV tuner card, I suppose, because then I can get free Tivo :-)!

You might not need a laptop. At the classes I sat in on during the GWHS competition, not a single person had a laptop with them.

Morgan, since you're going to be staying on campus for some time soon, you have to scout out for us:
1) how much electronics can the room reasonable fit
2) what kind of television service do the room get - cable?

and anything else interesting/important you find.

Thanks.

PS: There ARE laptops that have tv tuners, they're just really crappy.

I can answer #2 now. Cable service costs an additional $300 per year.

RE: PS: Yes they are really crappy, and add size to the laptop. Eiffelguy was asking about an aftermarket TV tuner to put IN to an existing laptop, which you can't do.

$300 a year?

Forget it, I can live without TV, I'll just head over to the commons once in a while to get my sports fix. Hopefully I'll be in Graham-Lees and it will be right next door. If not, it's still nearby.

Yeah, I wrote "I would prefer a room in Graham Lees" on my form. Dima, if you have a roommate, you could split the cable bill with him... that's what I'm going to do.

dima, he had a TV, a desktop, and a laptop.

Graham Lees is the best dorm room hall I guess?

Which is the second best?

The worst?

I like Graham-Lees because it is the closest to everything, the difference is pretty small but would be nice on a very rainy day.

Actually, I've heard the other residence halls have bigger rooms but I like having something closer when it rains.

The other residence halls are right next to each other (BDG) and I don't know if there is much ofa difference between them.

I guess that's a big benefit to being in a double, splitting costs for things like cable and a micro-fridge. But I'm still leaning towards a single partially because of what I've seen from the "College Life" Forum. I don't want to wake up to see someone having sex!

Hold-up-- there's CABLE in the dorms? Wow, is that typical of most schools? I need to pay more attention, I guess. One thing I would advise everyone not to do, since I've spent this past year living away from home and with a roommate, is not to split the cost of actual objects. Splitting a cable bill is fine, but you can't cut a couch in half at the end of the year and be happy. If you have a roomie, I would suggest that maybe one of you can buy a microwave and one of you can buy a fridge if you're looking to cut costs, but definitely don't purchase things jointly, because you will eventually be going your separate ways.
Oh, and I stayed in Davis while I was there-- the girl I was staying with had a double all to herself, so my perception of room size might be a little bit warped. I'm definitely going for a double... My friend is also an honor scholar and we're hoping that maybe they'll honor our request to room together. Here's hoping. Happy Easter everybody!

PS-- I think I'm just going to bring my laptop so I can watch the occassional DVD. I mean, I think if you're desperate to watch something on TV you can probably find someone who has one, and I don't plan on having enough time for regular TV watching.

Oh, and most people think Baker is the worst because it's more isolated from the other freshman dorms.

Just thought I'd throw this out there, since a lot of you haven't received your forms yet. The rooming sheet says that no request for dorm, room or roommate will be honored. I guess it's worth trying, though.

I'm going for a double to save money. (I'm cheap to the last drop).
