Singletary and other competitive scholarships

Either way!

For those w/DCs who have already received the Patterson Scholarship (like @suzy100 's DD) did your DC already have UK listed as the “college of choice” in the NMSC portal? DS received a letter in mid-Feb informing him that he has a “Heritage Scholarship” and that this is the final scholarship offer he will receive, but I believe he’s eligible for the Patterson if he lists UK as his #1 choice by mid-April. Does that seem right? Yes, I know he needs to call UK…or I need to call because he is never home during the hours when admissions would be open…but I don’t like calling colleges to ask about scholarships!

He has been admitted to the Honors program and the Global Scholars program, but we have not even visited and it’s a 10-hour drive, so I’m trying to evaluate whether or not we should try to fit in a visit.

Who can help the clueless today? TIA.

@GoAskDad, she has not designated UK as her top-choice school with NMC. You aren’t the first to ask me about that letter, and I had to go back and make sure that it really did say Patterson. I would call UK and ask about it. They are really really nice there about it.

@GoAskDad, IIRC, your son should be able to logon to the [MyUK portal](https://myuk.uky.edu) and see his financial aid that may or may not show the Patterson scholarship. My daughter’s Patterson was late in being posted, and the portal gave me a good talking point to call UK. As @suzy100 indicated, they are really nice about it. Good luck!

Would anyone who got a large scholarship from out of Kentucky mind sharing their stats? It’s D class of 16’s dream school

@GoAskDad‌ D received a letter offering the Patterson based on NMF status but has NOT listed UK as her first choice. She interviewed for the SIngletary – this letter was UK’s way of telling her she didn’t receive that but did receive the Patterson. HTH.

@kandcsmom I received a Presidential OOS and have a 4.46 W GPA (3.89 UW), a 2130 SAT superscored (M: 710 CR: 720 W:700), 2080 not superscored. I am 19/334 in my class, VP of NHS, Editor of our literary/newspaper publication, have four years of an equestrian varsity letter, took lots of APs/honors classes, very involved in my equestrian and art interests (awards etc), volunteer weekly (250+ hours), and intern at two vets offices (like 300 hours between the two).

Thanks, everyone. It’s likely that DS’s stats weren’t high enough to award him the Patterson outright (without NMF). I did call UK and the lady was very nice. She told me that DS would be eligible for the Patterson if he was a NMF and listed UK as his first choice. The Honors and Global Scholars programs sound fantastic, the Patterson would be incredible, but the distance to UK is a real concern. DS is narrowing his list, and we would have to visit very soon, but the whole thing is fairly overwhelming at the moment. :((

@GoAskDad‌ Is your DS still considering OU?

Wonder what criteria they looked at for this? My son didn’t get an interview in spite of having good stats and a lot of activities.

My D is a Patterson Scholar. She did not get an interview for the Singletary scholarship, nor did any of her friends. The Singletary appears to be intended for Kentucky residents and “the best of the best of the best.” Meeting the minimum requirements for this award does not mean that one will be offered an interview. As a whole, the University is very generous in their scholarships for students.

D was interviewed for the Singletary but didn’t receive it. We are in Indiana.

My son had a 36 on ACT. We are from out of state also. It definitely isn’t the best of the best as they gave it to someone he knows that had a 31 on ACT, minimal activities and had a low GPA.

Singletary Scholars were described to me as “the face and voice of the university” in many situations where students are used to promote UKy. The majority of recipients are IS students, but obviously some are awarded to OOS students as well. I would imagine that solid academic credentials would be a starting point for consideration, but as with many top scholarship awards at various universities there are many more things they are looking for. What those things are…who knows? Maybe it’s a particular “voice” in the essays, or maybe they’re looking for the one-legged Czech-American tuba player from North Dakota to fit their jigsaw puzzle plan for Singletary Scholars makeup.

Trying to figure out why Student A got an interview and Student B didn’t is just an exercise in futility. Your son has an excellent resume and should be congratulated for his accomplishments. I’m sure he was deserving of strong consideration for a Singletary interview, but whatever intangibles the Singletary folks were looking for just didn’t fall in his favor. If UKy doesn’t turn out to be the school for him, whichever school he does choose will be lucky to have him.

@Wolverine86, my daughter & @NaperMom’s daughter are in the same boat. Not that the vessel in question is “Titanic”. My wife called the financial aid people and we were informed that you might not get a shot at the Singletary if they figured you’d qualify for the Patterson. Since it was six of one and half-a-dozen of the other, we didn’t lose a whole lotta sleep over it. We were relieved to get the Patterson letter. We didn’t see how anything could get screwed up, but it ain’t over 'til it’s over.

I still haven’t received any scholarship letter. My adcom said that students are still being considered and I will know before May 1st. Hoping sooner rather than later

@AuntieFascist…Make room for a third in that boat. Patterson for D2 but no interview for Singletary, and she’s fine with that. We went through some WTH? moments 4 years ago with D1 (3.99UW/4.15W, 36 ACT, 2400 SAT) when she didn’t get invited to compete for the Shipman at UMich or the Eminence at tOSU, but she got a near full-ride at UMinn and has loved her 4 years there (graduates in May <:-P ). It definitely made the process this year with D2 and S more tolerable.

I think the OOS hurt him and he’s regretting that he didn’t put UK as #1 on his National Merit Finalist form, that would have at least helped him get the Patterson. UK offers a great package to those NM finalists in my opinion. He will be fine, we still love UK. Best of luck to everyone!!

@yyyyzzzz…Is your son planning on receiving a similar package from a different school? If he wanted, he should still be able to change his first-choice school with NMSC to UK. I don’t think any hard deadlines have passed that would prevent UK from offering him a Patterson if he names them as first-choice, but you can call the Scholarship office to confirm. The dollar value difference between a Patterson and a Singletary is only $500/year.

@Wolverine86, I can’t figure OSU and the Eminence out. It’s easier to qualify as NMF. Also, OSU only awards 30 Eminence scholarships. If you’re smart enough to qualify for it, you’re smart enough not to let yourself get caught in a numbers game. As a long-time Ohio resident, I’d like to see Ohio do more to retain that caliber of people. Dunno why they don’t have something like the Patterson. @yyyyzzzz, I think your son has until May 1 to declare UK as his first choice to get the Patterson.
