Sinner's Alley Happy Hour (Part 1)

Slugg:

Last year at this time, D had visited two snazzy schools back east who had given her official or unofficial "likely" info, lots of time & $ there, but we had to play this waiting game for Berkeley...should be any time now and then when the good news came, we got in the car and went for a visit...and that's where she is. If Cal could have been as user friendly as the others, I could have saved the time & $ spent heading down south & back east, but NOOOOOOO, they are too proud to make it easy on us ;) Thinking positive thoughts towards all the Berkeley applicants stressing out today!!

So, I was taking the things out of my cart in the checkout line at Safeway today, and I hear this elderly bagger saying to the cashier, "and then my mom asked me if I wanted my monkey back. And I said, no, I don't wan't to bury it again." Okay, whatever. So, we go out to the car. And then my teenage daughter says, "Did you hear what that guy said?" I say no. So she tells me "well the old guy said that he saved his money from his first job and bought a pet monkey. And the monkey lived for about 10 years and died. So he buried it. And then his mom made him dig it up because she wanted to stuff it. So she put it in the freezer. And she never stuffed it. So then she asked that guy if he wanted his monkey back!"

Mstee,

Hilarious.

We don't hear such things at the grocery in the midwest. Conversation snippets usually involve "goiter" or 'lumbago."

My county is the 2nd oldest in the country for a reason.

But remember, as John lennon said, "everybody's got something to hide except me and my monkey..."

HOLY ****! Mini Mudge in at YALE!!!

Slugg....I can't wait to welcome all you parents of seniors to the "other side"....that is, the other side of this admissions stuff....letters received, decisions made.....onto crying at senior "lasts" and talking of egg crate mattress pads. The other side is lots better.....waiting to welcome you...
Susan

SBmom--wow. Tks for that announcement. I'm so happy for the mudge family!!!!! WOOT!!!!!

Hmmm. I wonder how long that monkey was in the freezer . . .

And you know what is REALLY exciting? My seven year old is practising the piano. And I didn't tell her she had to! Oh, it's the little things in life that are SWEET.

41,700 minus 9,800 = 31,900 kids who did not get into CAL today! ;) Well, at least they didn't make us all wait until tomorrow morning to get the news. And, no pesky server problems like we had 15 days ago with UCSB.

"...Given your academic qualifications, we know that you will receive other attractive college offers." That comment alone from CAL (our not-so-warm-and-fuzzy alma mater) makes me proud of the sluggster.

"...If you took advantage of the University's multiple application filing policy, you may well have opportunities to study at other UC campuses." He did, and he will! :) We'll move him into a single dorm at UC Davis around September 25th. Then, SluggyH and I are heading straight to Tahoe where we're going to drink a lot of beer and run around the mountain howling at the moon. :D

Pop the champagne, and let's celebrate for Mudgie and Mudgette on her acceptance to YALE! Woooooot! We can all say that we knew him back when he was just a guy with some goats. At least, I think they're goats...or buffalo or ostriches. I lost track a while ago! It's a happy night in Mudgeville! :D

That's actually a very good playlist, m&sdad! :) I like, Money, by The Flying Lizards. A good one for today's big Ivy announcements.

Mstee -- Hahahahaha! :D That tops all of the grocery store snippets I've ever heard. Remind me to tell sluggson that he cannot leave a deceased monkey in our freezer.

Slugg, if its any consolation, about a week ago I was talking to my daughter about Berkeley (before she heard from other colleges) - and she said she didn't know if she would go even if she did get in, because basically the word from all her friends is that Berkeley is not such a friendly place for undergrads. My brother, who dropped out as a sophomore from Berkeley many years ago, revealed recently that it was the huge lecture sections that had defeated him... you know, the feeling that cozy feeling of being one in 800 in a classroom. And my son has opined after spending time at the Berkeley campus that the students there seemed way overstressed.

Lest any other Sinners' Alley denizens interpret this as a Berkeley-bash - I don't mean it that way -- I spent 3 years at Berkeley as a law student and absolutely loved it, and will always have very fond memories -- but we law students occupied our own small corner of the Berkeley universe. Berkeley might be a place best reserved for students who are very intensely focused, ambitious & highly self-reliant. Though I know him only through your posts, I suspect Slugg Jr. might not be one of those types.

Davis, on the other hand, can be a very foregiving place with lots of room to grow. I speak from personal experience, and many fond memories. It also offers excellent and challenging academics for those who want them -- but the general college atmosphere allows room for fun and relaxation. So I think Slugg Jr. will be much happier at Davis.

So stay happy. Davis is full of very happy campers. I was one of them. The town gets boring after awhile, but that problem is solved very easily with a car -- not necessary freshman year, but very nice as an upperclassman.

My daughter is a different matter. We have just learned that she has been admitted for Berkeley for the spring semester. A mere week ago this would have seemed the best of all outcomes -- I had been hoping for spring admit all along. (That would allow for the kid with the itch to get away from California to do some traveling first). Of course, that is not to be... she is out with friends tonight but allowed me to check online for her after I called and begged permission, but her response to the news of the congratulatory message was disdainful... "nah...." (Too bad we can't auction off the space on ebay).

And... we have our first family college rejection ever. (Up to now, between 2 kids and 18 other college outcomes, we have collected 3 waitlists, but never a flat out no.) Yes, folks, my daughter has been officially rejected from ..... Brown.

As to Barnard.... they surprised me to no end today by offering my d. a Pell Grant. I had always wondered who it is that qualifies for those things, and it turns out, oddly enough, that it is us. (Must tell Mini!!!!) [All this leads me to be very suspicious of the math that college financial aid offices do, since they also say our family contribution is $16K -- but that's a question for another day]. Still waiting on official notice from NYU, rather than the teasers, as well as their finaid award.

Slugg,

Ya know I worry about you. to Hell with Cal. You did your job and did it well, you are getting Sluggjr. out of your house this fall (wow, now a guest room for me :) )

Calmom,

Sorry about brown, but congrats on the Pell grant. You are right,
Mini would indeed be so proud of D's pelll grant (but then again he would also say I told you so when it comes to women's colleges). Hope that the $$ really works out.

Barkeep another round, we know that curmie is buying.

SluggB,

Must be nice to have the "where" question put to bed. Suspect ours could go down to the May 1 wire.

Calmom,

Kudos on the dollars. Heard Barnard is a special place.

Not that NYU is chopped liver. Heard Woody Allen say that he got caught cheating on a philosophy test there: he was looking into the soul of the kid sitting next to him :)

I am a latecomer to the Mudge-athon. How does Yale square with the 100% merit quest?

Sybbie, Brown was actually my daughter's FOURTH choice, AFTER Boston U. (which waitlisted her). (So no tears here -- unless they offered mega bucks in financial aid to entice her away from the others, she wouldn't have gone anyway). First & Second Choices were NYU & Barnard, so everything else at this point is trophy-collection. Still to come are Chicago & Fordham. Chicago deferred her and I kind of think they will waitlist her now ... she just isn't the Chicago "type" and with the Barnard & NYU admissions I'm starting to think that maybe colleges can tell which kids really are the best fits in terms of personality as well as academics. Fordham of course was intended as a safety - we think it is a great school, but they no longer offer a Russian major and their wonderful dance program (with Alvin Ailey) has no offerings whatsoever for nonmajors, so it wouldn't really give my daughter what she wants.

So at this point it all comes down to money. The Barnard offer is do-able, but there are some scary contingencies I have to think about -- it is all based on my son also being in college full time this coming year, and he is iffy - basically he is going to decide in July whether to go to Humboldt or whether to keep his local job and attend the local cc or CSU part-time.

m&sdad, I have a feeling that Curmudgeon & I need to cry into our beers together. My d. has been accepted to Berkeley, probably with lovely financial aid, and offered strong merit aid at Northeastern (which I hear is very open to negotiation if they think the kid will actually come - no accident that the merit offer comes from the "enrollment management" division). But how does he say no to sending his daughter to Yale? and how can I deny my d. Barnard? Like me, Cur is self-employed with complicated assets & income issues that leave him scraping by but not necessarily eligible for mega bucks of need based aid, and with a possibility of big fluctuations from year to year.
I'm expecting that I will have to spend a lot of time working out different scenarios on a spread sheet. I imagine Mudge will be doing the same.

Calmom--So, it looks like it will be, might be, should be Barnard! Well, it won't help much, but I'll buy you a beer while you're mulling over all the financial details.

Slugg--pooh on Berkeley.

Well goddamn it I told you so.

Did they get enough money? And where are you getting your inside information:)?

If you're asking about Cur, he posted here, post 73: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=163263&page=2&pp=40

And congratulations to everyone's great news!

Alu, have a drink on me. Who'd have thunk it? My little family understands how extremely fortunate D has been. Only a little bit of track left to travel . We'll get there. ;)

Thanks to all of you who have shepherded me through this process. We are getting down to the lick log now and everything is right as rain. (Confused as Hell but right as rain. Translation for Jmmom and maineparent, Confused as hell but finestkind.)

The LICK LOG?
please translate that sucker!

:)

and BTW we are soooooooo happy for you!!! Go Ellie Mae Jabaar!!

I have been waiting patiently (not) for the Real Curmudgeon to return to us. Welcome back.

Hi Curmudgeon! Nice to see you!
