Cider? What was with that cider we bought to quench our thirst on our climb of Ben Nevis? Apple juice, right? Then how come we were dizzy at the top of the Scottish Highlands four hours later? The lochs and lads never looked so good.

Thanks for the wine tips, and the link. I really appreciate the specifics. Our grocery stores sell wine - one big long aisle. I walked down it, and realized I seriously needed help! I don't know where else to buy wine. Are there package stores here? (In PA, all liquor is sold at "State Stores", but I don't know how it works here in GA - I've only lived here 23 years.....) Jym, is this something I should be making a run out to Chateau Elan for, or is Kroger good enough? I do like the idea of asking someone else to choose a $20 bottle for me.

I'm not going to panic yet, since I don't even know if he's coming here, or if we'll end up going out. Oh, one more question - red wines are served room temp? From the bottle? (I noticed that the link had wine decanters - is that better than just serving from the bottle? Or do you use that only when you want to hide the fact that you bought something cheap?)

On the other hand, cider sounds great! And they don't have cider in Germany...

Noooo, binx, dont go to Chateau Elan, unless you are planning to play a round of golf or something.Their wine isnt very good. You can go to the supermarket, but I 'd recommend you go to a local package store or wine shop. I thik there is a "Total Wines" up in your part of town. They will have a much bigger selection and can make an excellent recommendation from their stock.

I'm not sure how far exit 13 off 400 is but if isn't far there is a specialty wine shop across from the Avenue shops called Wynes for the Tymes. They have wine tastings every weekend and a very knowledgable staff.

Total Wines seems to be up in Kennesaw, and 400 is a bit far as well. So I googled around a bit, and I found a "WineStyles" store near me. It looks promising. Thanks, ladies!

binx-
There is a Total Wines on Abernathy now too, near Perimeter. Wanna meet for lunch on Friday? I'd love to ck out the store! Never been there.

Not sure I can this week, jym. I'd love the help, but can't afford the time. My mother felt sorry for me because I was going to be alone on my birthday, so she came and stayed with me for a week - with her two cats. She left Monday. I'm still recovering. H came home this evening after being in Orlando for a week. If the boss-guy comes over, it will probably be Friday (he's eager to experience an American Halloween) or Saturday, and I will be madly cleaning and cooking and running to the grocery store to get everything I forgot on my other 12 trips that day.

Having company while answering the door constantly on Halloween should be interesting.....
Well, maybe another time. You can get a good wine from a local wineshop.

binx,

A decanter is not necessary. These are intended for use with wines that have aged for a while so the wine needs to be poured off the sediment. Those wines will be out of your price range.

Yes, room temp or slightly cooler (55-65 degrees F) is correct. You can achieve this "cellar temperature" by putting the bottle in the refrigerator for 15-20 minutes. Or just stay with room temperature.

Do you have a corkscrew?

Binx, if I were you I'd get a nice American red wine. The suggestions are fine. If you can find a wine store I'd tell the owner the price range I was willing to spend. I'd get an American wine. I'd probably also get some beer in case he'd prefer it. Germans do tend to drink beer with everything - though they also have wines. Again, I'd go with an American beer, but something like Sam Adams not Budweiser.

Thanks, everyone. In general, Germans hate American beer, but I've heard them say somewhat nicer things about Sam Adams. Atlanta has a brewery - can't remember the name of it - but I might be inclined to offer it for the "local flavor", so to speak. This particular boss is actually a distance relative of a certain famous brewery (known for its Clydesdale horses and theme parks!) He does like his beer. H and I are pretty sure he had wine when he and his wife took us out, but H says he usually has beer. So I might have to have both available.

Thats a good idea, binx-- get them Sweetwater beer. The Sweetwater 420 is their most popular. Keep in mind, though, that it is October, and Octoberfest beers are popular now. If Sweetwater makes a darker beer for this season, it would be a good thing to get. They do make seasonal beers (stay away from their "Blue" beer-- it was made with blueberries an was a little weird)

Jym, you are a wealth of knowledge!

Their website is a little hard to navigate, but you might want to get the Sweetwater 420 or their Georgia Brown Ale Sweetwater Brewery

The seasonal brews available in October are Motor Boat (sounds like a heavier beer) and Festive Ale (which has cinnamon and mace) If you go to the website, click on the"brews" option at the bottom and then click onthe first "tap" to read more about them.
Thanks binx! I aim to please!

Here's a good wine:

"Harry, take me to Miami."

Congrats IvoryK on your Phillies win from the other side of the state.

A Phillie Phan nod to MOWC too!

We are invited out for dinner tonight and won't be home to answer the door for Trick or Treaters. And I already bought candy! oh-oh....who's going to eat all that candy?

Maybe I should put the porch light on and leave the candy in a basket.

thanks guys -- It's been quite a ride here in Philly. As it turns out -- imagine this -- my high schooler wasn't feeling well this morning, so school just didn't seem possible. I crossed my fingers and let her head downtown for the parade.

That's what we do if we have to leave the house on Hallowe'en, along with a sign that says, "Please take one!" (Or 2 if they're small.) Occasionally you'll get a bad egg who'll grab lots (or even all) but usually this works well.
