Sinner's Alley Happy Hour (Part 1)

Cyber Dom Perignon! We're living large tonight. Here's to YoMama & Quiltguru's daughters :)

Absolutely! :) :) :)

Congrats!!

Congrats to YoMama & Quiltguru's daughters!

Meanwhile I am stressing out and trying to decipher tea leaves here. D. is EA to Chicago, and the mail has not yet made it to the west coast. Not that it stopped me from running out to our post office box in the pouring rain to check. No go, must wait until Monday to check again. Aaargh.. [D, of course is cool as a cucumber. Hanging with friends, delighted that her winter break has started, anxious for her boyfriend's arrival back next week]

But here's the thing -- round about last Wednesday, two bulky publications arrived from U of C... one was a course catalog, the other was a "Users Guide" which came with a cover letter saying it was what is given to current students, as opposed to marketing material given to prospies. And so I am left wondering what genius in the Chicago accounting department would possibly allow the college to incur extra postage on unneeded items for a student the school is about to reject, not to mention the needless torment it is to dangle such enticing jewels in front of the soon-to-be-shunned.

On the other hand, such tidbits might be quite useful in preserving interest and softening the blow for the soon-to-be-deferred. So we shall see.

Aaargh, again.

Carolyn, sorry to hear about your howling beagle, I read your posting right after watching charlie brown (if all dogs could be like snoopy). Poor broke college student laughed as I read your tale of woe aloud .This is why we send them off to college, because she is definitely thowing off our dog's routine.

Moot- wonderful news about your son.

Calmom, the waiting can be painful, have another one on me. I think that good news is on the way.

calmom - although I don't think a full blown pity party would fit you (in fact, I am crossing fingers - with sybbie - that good news is on the way), I think we can set up a little Waiting In Anguish Party for you over in the corner. Lots of time-passing gizmos will be passed around - Pong games, Soduku puzzles, ... Or, keep having another one on sybbie and it will be Monday when you wake up. ;)

calmom, if a course catalog isn't a big clue, I don't know what is. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and am saying a prayer, nevertheless. And, audiophile, a toast to you is also in order, I hear. La Chaim!

Yeah, in general the course catalogs from highly selective schools don't seem to show up unsolicited.

And Jmmom, don't even utter the words "pity party"....that forbodes bad news, and we're hoping for good. More like waiting-in-anxious-anticipation. Nothing to feel sorry for.

So there will be champagne all around if there is a big fat white envelope on Monday. (Yes, I confess, I have lurked in the Chicago thread and I know that if it is good news, the envelope will arrive with $2.44 first class postage affixed). Maybe even some of the real stuff around the house, though we'll probably settle for the bottle of sparkling cider in the faux-champagne bottle lying on its side on the frig.

Calmom,
Wishing you the best. Itd so much harder to get in EA, but then the wait is over. Personally, I think it would be mean to send course catalogue with a rejection letter. Have all the kids on Chicago site gotten the catalogue? That would be a hint

Calmom, I don't know if this helps, but last year S1 was accepted EA to Chicago and also was sent the catalog and some other materials for accepted students. I don't remember if he received those before the acceptance letter, but it would be unkind and expensive to send those items to every applicant, accepted or not. Good luck to your D!

Sybbie - Thanks (I think) for the invite to SA. First time I've ventured in here ... then again, by rights I should probably be in a drunken stupor by now ... after non-stop discussion at home about 25 applications!

Serving champagne here too for an acceptance to Harvard - just can't afford Dom Perignon with two heading out next year. Congrats to QuiltGuru and YoMama - I get the "Go Bulldogs" but I'm not quite sure what I'm supposed to say here - "Go Crimson"?

Can't wait till I can pour champagne in honor of my other one's acceptance. April seems so far away.

Actually Bookworm, I'm a little bit afraid to ask about the catalog over on the Chicago thread - didn't want to hurt any feelings in case others didn't get it - but no one volunteered info on receiving materials either. The Chicago thread is very encouraging -- other kids with test scores as sucky as my daughter's did get in, so that means that they didn't take one look at the ACT score , start snickering and toss the app into the trash.

Meanwhile, daughter is sitting on her bed calmly sorting and reorganizing all o fher college app folders, so I think her mind is already a few steps ahead of the Chicago letter.

Twinmom,

Welcome to SA!

Pull up a chair, a stool or whatever else makes you comfortable and have whatever you want. If saying "Go Crimson" makes you happy, go for it.

There are no rules; well actually there are some of the basic rules posted on the first page of this thread but we make new ones up along the way and no cover charges.

You can totally wind down after 25 applications, celebrate acceptances, let your hair down while you wait for april (you will have plenty of company).

You can sing your song, dance a jig, tell your story, lament (but it better have a twist) or just plain have fun. Relax and sit a spell because nothing is off limits and you'll definitely have a few laugh out loud moments. Audiophile is paying for the Dom, so drink up.

DH put up our Christmas tree. Stand was wobbly, so he positioned a couple of books under the stand. Our Christmas tree is now being supported by "The Catcher in the Rye" and "The Stranger".

I'll take some more champagne, please, after I finish laughing.

I'm drinking - mixed it with orange juice as it's Sunday morning!

Hey Calmom--good luck with the Chicago EA decision. I surely hope they didn't send a catalog if she's not in. That would be so rude. My D's boyfriend applied EA to Chicago, too. I guess he'll find out tomorrow as well. I don't know if he got a catalog or not.

We may be meeting the BF's parents today. Because they invited our D to spend part of their vacation with them. So, we have to check them out, of course. How awkward is that! I guess I had better not have a drink before we meet, but save me a spot in SA for after!

Our 10 ' Christmas tree was US $10. I told the farmer at the market that I would have paid US$80 for such a tree and her eyes went as wide as saucers. This tree is so fresh, the branches are curling upward to counteract the weight of the ornaments.

Now...anyone have a homemade recipe for eggnog? Don't see any in the stores as yet...

**I've got a good feeling about those catalogues calmom. congrats to you twinmom. 25 apps! You're going to CC heaven on a rocket!

Well, I overheard my daughter on the phone to talking to her dad, telling him that she expects to either be deferred or rejected, then launching into a long explanation as to what "deferred" means and the whole EA vs. RD thing, finally an exasperated comment about how, whenever she talks with older people she finds she needs to explain how much the college app process has changed since when they were young. Guess dad was asking some dumb questions.

Anyway, I'm feeling very optimistic but haven't breathed a word to my daughter - I'd rather have a pessimistic kid who is pleasantly surprised than an optimistic ones with hopes dashed. The val/class pres at her school just got deferred at Harvard - and she thought he was sure to get in, though I don't think so -- he's got terrific grades and EC's, but I see that they are also rather typical, Harvard probably has 1000 applicants just like him. My d's strength - and weakness - is a more quirky record - the key is to guess which schools will like the quirks. Chicago might be one.... or maybe not. We'll see.

In any case, I'm afraid I'd jinx things if I actually told her I expect her to get in. Better to wait and see.

calmom, I think you are playing it just right. Kick back and wiggle your toes. Have a cyber martooni? Sun has got to be across the yard-arm somewhere. ;)

Those Twelve Wise Men just kill me, they're a bunch of Goddamn Phonies...

Calmom, Obviously, FA played no part in the college process, but I suspect he'll boast plenty about his terrific D!
