Do you have to email them for the major change before you submit the SIR or wait for them to change it then submit it, or can you email them after you send it in? I’m changing from economics to ecology and evolution major, it takes them up to 2 weeks to process and there are only 10 days to submit sir. So should I just submit sir now under economics or wait till they change it to submit?
Parent of admitted student here: when we toured UCSB they said it’s pretty easy to change College of Arts and Sciences majors early on. (My son was accepted Undeclared.) I would submit the SIR first.
@jmaddy10 send in the SIR now, no need to wait.
If you read the info on the page https://undergrad.biology.ucsb.edu/majors/ecology-evolution you will see that nobody is admitted as a frosh to ecology and evolution. There are required prep classes and only after passing them can you ask to be admitted to the major; this is around the start of your junior year. So your major change form is not really changing your major, it changes what is listed as your pre-major which means basically nothing.
All you need to do at this point is sign up for the appropriate classes during orientation to get started on the pre-major. If it makes you feel better to be listed as a pre-bio major you can likely make that switch at orientation, and for sure can do it the start of your frosh year.
But it makes absolutely no difference; anyone at UCSB can sign up for the pre-major classes, they are not restricted like engineering and some other classes. Nobody is going to require you to take econ classes. It would not even be a problem to be listed as pre-econ until your junior year when you apply for the ecology and evolution major (assuming you are still interested in it by then; people tend to change their major once or twice).
