Just submitted my SIR to UCB! It was extremely hard to choose between UCB and UCLA for about 5-7 days, and then it hit me that I really belong at UCB and shouldn't have questioned it from the start.

Who's going to CalSO? and what days? I'm thinking of going June 10th.

@noodle: i’m trying to figure that out too! all i’ve heard is that the wada apartments are ideal for transfers. but idk much at all. do you know anything about the housing? do you have preferences?

One question. Which area is nicest in Berkeley, but still close. Is it northern Berkeley, is it up in the hills, is near University drive, or perhaps Telegraph? And which parts are the worst, meaning which parts do I stay away from at night? I’m going to be looking at apartments and I don’t want to get mugged at all, not a single solitary chance. Another question, are most muggings executed by people without arms or with arms, meaning do they have weapons and what type of weapons do they have? Reason I ask is because If I buy a taser and most muggings are at gun point, the taser won’t be very useful. However, if the muggings are just by unarmed people, I’d have no problem pretending to look in my backpack for my wallet and unloading a million volts into their neck.

@Vintij: The biggest problems in Berkeley aren’t really muggings, more like burglary and petty theft! That isn’t to say muggings do not occur. I was talking to one of my friends who had his laptop stolen from his car, and he said that property damage/theft are far more common than armed confrontations.

I personally do not know what the “good” and “bad” parts of Berkeley are, honestly, even after going there several times, hahahaha. It is hard to distinguish just looking on the surface, but it seems to me that you will be safer the closer you stay to the University. Although Telegraph and University give the impression that they’re sort of… how do I say this… a little run down!? There’s lots of hobos around that area, anyway, is what I’m trying to say! But I’ve walked down both of those streets fairly frequently and have never felt in danger of a mugging. In Berkeley, you’ll probably want to avoid any little side streets where there is not a lot of college traffic. Other than that, I have no advice. I will be in the same boat as you in the fall, just hoping I make the right decision on apartments! >_<

Still, you should try your best to be prepared to handle confrontations, as well as prevention. Things like walking in 3+ groups, NOT having electronic devices out while walking, or NOT having earphones in your ears or around your neck will be first steps. You might think it’s common sense, but then again, common sense is circumstantial to the environment, so I would suggest that you just be more aware of yourself and the environment.

june 10th is still open. when i try to sign up for Calso that’s actually the only date i can sign up for…i think they reserve spots for haas students bc that’s the only date when haas reps show up or something
