I am a senior in university. It is possible to sit for the CPA exam without a degree? I know the requirements for licensure, but I wanted to know if I can sit for the exam before I graduate. I live in FL and meet all the requirements under the new rule, the 120 semester hours, accounting, and business classes… etc. Would it be possible to sit for the CPA exam before graduating with my Bachelor’s?
You need to check with the FL Board of Accountancy on that. Back in my day (before you were born) we were able to sit for the exam in our last semester of college before we earned our degrees. In those days, the exam was offered twice a year (on specific days).
^^^Agree, the rules are not exactly the same from state to state so check the rules of the FL Board of Accountancy.
Keep in mind that it is now required to have 150 credits to become a CPA but in most (if not all) states you can sit for the exam before that.
@arc918 I probably took the test about when you did (no calculators either back then-- at that time in NYS you had to graduate college to sit for the CPA exam while in PA you did not – so there was definitely variation from state to state. FWIW the exam is administered on the computer now, one part at a time, with the test taker arranging the time/date.
Thanks, I called the board and they said their requirements don’t mention needing a Bachelor’s degree to sit. I think I’ll just apply and see how it goes, hopefully they’ll let me know the reason if I’m rejected.
