Is this a form of cheating?
If it is, is it okay if I just sit in the class w/o taking the tests?
I don't want to audit is because it costs the same amount and there is no credit.
It is a fairly big class for a small public university.
I'm also not sure if I want to take the class in the future because I really am not sure of my major (was thinking of changing to computer science), but just in case I would like to be prepared as this is a hard subject (chemistry 2).
I don't want to actually take the class this semester for a grade because I would like to focus on other important general education classes that I know I have to take. I have already taken all my science prerequisites.

Has anyone tried this before?

Thank you.

At my school what you describe is the same as auditing. Someone did that in my Arabic class last semester (she was married somehow, and her husband went to my school, though she had already graduated), and she was definitely one of the best students. The teacher graded all her work gladly.

I don’t think you should take tests or anything. Sitting in on the class and doing homework is fine, but you shouldn’t be turning anything in.

I wouldn’t take the tests since they might be used again the next time the class is offered and that would give you an advantage. You might want to check with your school to see if it is okay to sit in on the class without being registered for it.

I wouldn’t do this. In this case asking forgiveness is better than asking permission.

If you actually take tests in the class and hand them in for grading (because how else are you going to know how you actually did on them?), the teacher is going to discover you are not officially registered, and then the ‘drama’ begins in terms of what happens next. I wouldn’t recommend it. Also, if you decide to officially audit, ask if once audited a class can then be taken later for credit. Schools will probably have different policies on this. Good luck with your decision.

Agree that taking the tests is going to cause problems.

If it’s a huge class, you can probably sit it with no problem…unless there’s some sort of sign-in sheet. Frankly, contacting the prof would a professional thing to do and would be the courteous thing: “I’m interested in the topic but am unable to register for your course at this time. Would it be possible for me to sit in on your lectures?” Since you’re not creating any extra work at all, the prof is more than likely to give you permission.

Sitting in the class is now big deal, especially if it’s in a lecture hall, rather than a small classroom.

Do not take the exams without asking the professor for permission first. For one thing, you’re potentially wasting their time, and I know when I was a TA and grading exams, that would have really annoyed me. Secondly, when they go to input the grades, they’ll have no idea who you are and will have no way of contacting you (besides just making an announcement in class, and you might not even be there that day). It may very well delay they’re ability to post grades, it’ll cause extra work on their part because they’ll have to figure out who you are, and it’s really just not worth it. So regardless of whether they consider it cheating or not, don’t do it without prior permission from the professor.
