Sitting in on first day to try to get a class?

Hm so I got in through appeal 2 weeks ago and I didn't have that many choices when it came to choosing classes. I have bio93 right now but I really want to take writing 39b and chem 1a this fall quarter but those 2 are both full right now. Has anyone had the experience to sit in on the first day of school and got the class they wanted? and How does it work? Thanks!

Well when I was in writinge 39b, there were a lot of students who stood outside the door and sat in class just to try to get their add/drop card signed by the prof. It does work if you go as early as possible and fight for a spot because other people will try to get in too.

getting into writing is really hard. from what i understand, professors can’t add above the limit. they can only add you with a card on the first day if somebody doesn’t show up (and therefore would be dropped from the class).

Yes Jennifer, that’s exactly how it was. If you really want to get into the class keep attending for like a week, because I guarantee you there are bound to be people who don’t show up or are tardy too many times (it was like 3 tardies and 3 absences or something till you were kicked out).

in smaller classes like writing, ive found that most kids cannt add because the school is fairly strict about limiting the classes size.

in larger lecture halls one prof added sooo many students, when the midterm/finals came, they had to ahve overflow rooms (the lecture hall could not seat every student enrolled in the class… ahah) whether you get a teacher willing to do that is another story.

you should definitely try for chem 1a but for the writing class it’s kind of hard, but worth a shot. just hope somebody doesn’t show up!

ok! thanks. Do you know where I can get the add card?

You can find them on a little counter in Aldrich Hall
