six-college system

I will be applying to UCSD this month as a transfer student, and I was wondering if anyone could explain to me how the “six-college” system works? Will the college I choose depend on my major? Will I be taking the same classes as kids from other colleges? Do different colleges have different classes and/or professors? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

Good question. I would like to know this also. I've been reading all the threads and none seem to answer this question!! This "six colleges in one university" thing is sooooo confusing!!! AMIRITE?

Think of it as Hogwart's four houses. Six colleges, six different sets of general ed requirements, and six different parts of the university.

YA U RITE

Anyway, the reason UCSD is split up into six universities was to implement more of a LAC feel rather than the typical "large, state university" environment that the other UCs employ. This allows for more centralized foci on studies based on the school's respective philosophy and GEs; in UCSD's case, disregard the philosophies as they're essentially useless and only look at the GEs.

The easiest way to choose is:
a) Engineering major = Warren as #1 college
b) Everything else = Muir as #1 college

The six-college system hurts us, too, since UCSD lacks unity in terms of a cohesive university. Among my friends, a lot of the time people are too lazy to even walk for 5-10 minutes to a different college in order to visit friends.
