Was excited to see that I got off the waitlist, but I got into my second to last choice, Sixth College, and for my 2nd choice major, structural engineering. Honestly, I don't even know what structural engineering is and I just chose it as a filler. What I really want to major in is Bio or Chem for pre-med, and go to miur, revelle, or warren

My question is, Will sixth college still be a good place to major in science IF I am able to switch majors. From what I heard, sixth is mainly for art majors so I don't know if I'll fit in there since I'm terrible in every form of art.

UCSD was my top choice, but I'm not really liking the sixth college GE's.

GEs are GEs and UCSD is UCSD. You take your GEs and get them over with. Yes they won’t be ideally enjoyable for you, but still, they might not be so bad. And your college has nothing to do with your major. It just determines your GEs and where you live. Also, chemistry isn’t an impacted major so you can easily switch into that.

I am an undeclared major and I just got off the waitlist too. And I’m also placed into Sixth College! My top choice was Revelle… but from what I heard, Sixth College is the newest and is pretty “chill” and the GE’s are easier than some of the other colleges? I’m not sure. I wanted to switch into biological science but I don’t know if I would get in… What should I do? :/

Sixth college was my first choice and is actually pretty good for science. I’m graduating with a Bioengineering:Premed degree and it was manageable to finish all the GEs within 4 years. For sixth itself it’s pretty much just 3 lower division writing courses and 2 upper division courses where one of them is a project based course, which you can substitute it with a science class (i.e. biotech techniques lab) or independent research if you’d like. The other upper division writing class is pretty much just online blogging and writing essays about your major, so I wouldn’t sweat it as they only give A’s,B’s or F’s in that class. I’d focus more on your major classes because you can always take your GE’s pass/no pass :)

@toosie: I think it would be difficult for anyone to switch into biology because it’s extremely impacted especially at UCSD. I wanted to switch into biological sciences too until I called in and they told me it was extremely difficult to do so, which is why I am probably going to Davis or Irvine where I can actually get my major Best of luck though!

There are very few biology-only classes since the premed requirements (micro, physiology, respective labs, etc) need to be open to those who are other majors and still pre-med. Being a premed and a non-biology major is NOT going to be a problem.

I’m a Biology major, and in Sixth. It’s manageable, and I really enjoy it here, as most students in their respective colleges do. Don’t worry about it… also see the many posts talking about how not impossible it is to get into the impacted major so long as your GPA is decent (in honesty, if you’re pre-med, like Astrina has mentioned countless times, you don’t have to be Bio, but if you’re pre-med your GPA should be strong enough to get you into the department regardless).
