Hey guys,
I know how much I was always looking for student taken photos while I was on my college search, and I was always looking around the internet for pictures kids have just taken while walking around campus… so I went on tour yesterday, took quite a few photos, and I’m posting a few of my favorites. I always wished someone had done this for me, so hopefully I’m doing someone a favor by doing this. I took over a hundred photos, so if you have any special requests, I might have them (I went to muir, sixth, and just the main campus (library walk, price center, etc.). I went on a sixth college tour (the college I was admitted to), so this is for all those sixth kids who can’t find anything about their college, enjoy guys.

Sixth college is a suite style setup: They look like cabins kind-of, and its a couple cabins spread out across a grassy field.

You walk into the “cabin”, and there is a common room connecting three rooms, so six people. And theres generally four common rooms to a each big “cabin” building, so 24 people to each little building. They looked like nice facilities, with a kitchen attached to the common room, but its nothing like a proper “residence hall”. It’s definitely an acquired taste, but most people in it tend to love it.

6th college dorms are nicknamed Camp Snoopy haha. The actual dorm rooms are kind of small but all very clean and nice. Careful of that furniture, don't plop down on the sofas!

Thanks lvshorty610. I really appreciate what you are doing. By any chance, did you take pictures inside of the sixth college's "cabins" and rooms?

I actually didn't get the chance to get any pictures of inside sixth college cabins and rooms -- mainly because I didn't get to go inside the cabins and rooms. I kinda snuck a glance at a common room that was open as we passed by, but I for sure didn't get to see any rooms. Since the way the college dorms are setup, they don't have any demo rooms that we can see... so they told us that if we really wanted, we could come back on our own time and knock on doors and ask to see, but the tour was not allowed to show us their rooms. Kinda crappy, but meh. Thats one of the things I wanted to see MOST, but what can you do.

The common room I saw though, was decently sized. I suck at room dimensions, but it was moderately sized. It's big enough for probably 4 people to hang out in comfortably, having all 6 in there would be a bit close quarters, but still certainly do-able.

I googled "ucsd sixth common", and thats what came up, and thats actually it. It's really small, but you can sort of get a feel for what its like, with the rooms attached.

I too was also somewhat disappointed when I saw the Sixth dorms; theres no "residence hall" life... the suite style is much more of an off-campus type thing students might do who have already had the freshman residence hall dorm life experience and met their circle of friends. The problem I see is that it seems like you might hang out with the people in your building, and it might end up being cliquey and you would have very small social circles because you arent really connected to everyone else in sixth in the same way people in residence halls are connected to one another (not to mention its the smallest college of the 6 anyway). I mean, UCSD has "bad social life" problems, and I kinda felt this would contribute to it -- it'd be pretty tough to have a big party in the sixth dorms.

On a more positive note though, I do have to say, its a very nice grassy quad out in front of each dorm. Its one big grassy quad (with wifi i think) in which the dorms kind of circle around. I talked to one student, and he said that he didn't like how separated it was at first, but he's grown to liking it, and that there are certain positive aspects of it (less likely to get stuff stolen, easier and nicer bathroom/shower conditions, etc.) -- that more or less, you make the best of what you have, and you'll come to love it no matter what.

So rest assured, the students who live there are certainly content with what they have -- it just takes some getting used to.

Oh yeah, and since they are still trying to come up with a name for sixth college, those of you who go into might end up having a say it its new name. Which would be pretty cool, because in say 50 years from now when UCSD is even stronger and sixth has a better legacy, if you helped name it, you could be like "yeah, I helped name that school." One kid had the idea of naming it "Jimi Hendrix College"... it would certainly level the playing field with guys like Muir, Revelle, etc., heh heh... Plus, it fits in with the "art" theme =)

My dad is actually that rotund asian man with a mullet standing conspicuously to the right of one of those pictures. And I wasn't even with him. Nice odds.

Res halls are co-ed by suite I believe, and if the floor plan shows one bathroom per floor, that makes sense. Because in these cabin-like structures, one floor is 6 guys, and another floor could be 6 girls. Don't quote me on that, but I think thats accurate.

And thats actually really cool/funny/ironic your dad is that guy in the picture, heh heh

@kenneth2005, those are not pictures of the sixth college apartments, which are much, MUCH better looking. thats why i applied for sixth college apartments and not the dorms

Hey.....really appreciate the pictures dude.....but i was disappointed with the dorms.....I always wanted to stay in a traditional residence hall thing.....neways I guess i'll grow to like it........anybody knows how good "sixth college" is?anybod with an engineering major here?
