I got accepted into sixth college as a biochemistry/chemistry major and i was wondering if it is good for a pre-med track. all i've hear from alot of people that it's an artsy college.

Well, I honestly don’t know the answer to your question, but I also got admitted to Sixth College and I also plan to go the pre-med route. My first choice was Revelle and I guess I wasn’t good enough for it. I’m really upset I didn’t get into my first or second choice college or receive any sort of scholarship either. I’ve been accepted to better UCs (yeah, I’m talking about Berkeley and more) which are actually willing to admit me with money and colleges and majors of my choice. Good bye, San Diego!

oh and my cousin is currently a biochem/chem major at sixth. she says it’s cool, but revelle is a much better science school. she also says it’s more focused on humanities than science. she doesn’t love it but she also doesn’t hate it.

You’ll be taking the same science classes as everybody else, your other GEs are just a little bit different. You won’t notice any significant differences otherwise being in Sixth compared to Revelle (or any of the other colleges for that matter).

I am currently a Sixth student on the pre-med route. Honestly, I would rather be in Sixth rather than any other college for pre-med. The reason is this. Sixth College has a few GE requirements (like the science and math requirements) that blend in with pre-med nicely. Also, Sixth GE requirements forces you to take classes like music, visual art, sociology, psychology, critical gender studies, etc. Not only does this allow you to explore different subjects and classes you probably would not have done were you in another college, but medical school actually LIKES it when you take a variety of different classes as opposed to taking all biology classes (BORING!). And Sixth GE requirements should not add too much to the heavy pre-med courseload which is good. Hope this helps!

I am also a Sixth college student and although Revelle does focus more on science classes, the required writing classes are MUCH harder then the ones required for Sixth. Each college has its strengths and weaknesses but Sixth’s GEs are extremely manageable regardless of what your major is.

thank you everybody for your responses. my mind is at ease after reading this. Now i feel more comfortable with going to SD. thanks again.

Sixth is fine. Foodworx is kind of bad now since the new management came… but other than that, you’ll be fine. I’m pre-med and I’m doing well so don’t worry about GE stuff. The GE’s that don’t overlap with your sciences are generally interesting, and if you really hate some of the GEs, take them P/NP… and take Doppelt for CAT 2 if you’re into medical ethics :P

From what I’ve seen, sixth college GEs aren’t too “artsy” and they’re pretty well-rounded. If you’re doing premed here then you’ll be fine =)

sixth college isn’t artsy at all. it just seems artsy because the writing program is based on culture, art and technology. I am a human bio major and trying to pursue dentistry, and the sixth college GE’s have not gotten in the way of taking the required classes for dentistry school. I thought revelle was a science college because it was in the middle of the science buildings. Each college isn’t tailored towards specific fields of studies, it is based on GE’s, so sixth college and pre-med will go perfectly fine with one another
