I just got admitted into Sixth College as a Communications major (I'm also going to as PoliSci as a second major). I don't really know anything about any of the schools, so tell me, what are the pros and cons?

Cons: Old camp snoopy/log cabin dorms, far away from everything, crappy dining hall(it's not even a dining hall actually)
pros: uhhh... closest college to the AMC/Ralph's/Trader Joe's complex?

Don't worry about the dorms. They're old (and yes, they look like summer camp dorms), but I'm pretty sure the dorms at Muir and Revelle are even older. And on the inside, they all look pretty much the same. So don't let that bother you too much. And our apartments aren't too bad (definitely on par with any other college's apartments).

As far as the "far away from everything else" argument.. I don't understand that. Sixth is closer to Price Center than any other college.. I would say that ERC is the most isolated college, in terms of distance from the center of campus.

Sixth also has good GE requirements.

what? but sixth college is the newest one. why would it look old?

^ Every time a new college comes to campus, they get the sort of 'temporary' dorms in the south part of campus. They used to be marine barracks I hear. That is why they look old.

Yeah, they were military housing before. Then they where home to ERC (fifth college) until ERC got its new diggs on the west side of campus.

Their dining hall's pizza and sandwiches are known for being good, or so I hear.

Good GE's, too.

yeah, the newest college typically gets leftover housing. they built ERC's new housing about 8-10 years ago. After they moved, sixth took their old space. eventually, they'll tear down Sixth's housing and build something new. I'm not sure if they're planning on a seventh college or not (the original plans for the university from the 1960s had like 8 or 10 colleges, but it seems like they'll run out of room if they try that)..

Hey, ERC's dorms were built in 2003... we're only 5.5 years old! hahaha

i would also like to hear more on this. I'm in 6th college as well!

does anyone know when they are building the new dorms for 6th?

o0o0 gasp! i got into Sixth for Communications too! :] see you there???

so i have a friend that goes to UCSD but shes in marshall here is her input
SIXTH COLLEGE:
* VERY far removed from other colleges & classes
*chocolate festival each year. funn and yummy
* Dorm structure is awkward
* GE's are okay, emphasis on culture, art, and technology
* Dining common has great food, but doesn't have any indoor sitting area--so you basically have to take food back to dorm

Other things i heard but maybe not true.. but maybe

-The core sequence (a class named CAT) is pretty much complete BS, but it's only for one year, 2nd easiest GE after Muir
- can't say that the Sixth college is the center of social life at UCSD but people tend to be more tight-knitted due to CAMP SNOOPY
-People in the same suite share a common bathroom and lounge area. The suites are not co-ed but the building is overall co-ed.
-focus on tech and art so that is a major plus for communications major
-some would stay away from sixth - its a bunch of liberal arts and humanities crap that just gets in the way.
-people who have great ideas and innovation come here

and if you guys are YouTube Fanatics Wesley Chan of WongFuProductions went to sixth:P

and some random pics of sixth

hmm my 1st choice was marshall muir then 6th -__-
but hey ill give it a chance....

anyone going to ADMIT DAY?

There isn't any indoor seating at foodworx (Sixth's dining hall), but there are about 50 covered outdoor tables.

The dorms (interior, anyway) are pretty much the same as any other dorms on campus. They're going to replace them eventually, but probably not for a few more years.

Sixth is kind of isolated, but honestly, it isn't that bad. We're talking an extra 5 minutes of walking to get to some of the furthest lecture halls. Sixth is closest to Price Center (the center of campus). And Warren is only about a two minute walk from Sixth's apartments.

@TNE

I AM! I'm in 6th haha. Are you going to ADMIT DAY!? Wanna be mah first friend there?! Lol...

None of my friends like going to UCSD since we live like 20 mins away, they all want to "get out" of SD. :(

yee hell yes im going to admit day. hahaha 8 hour drive from the bay area woot woot!

but boo you live 20 mins away from sd, ur not gonna be a commuter are you?

Are bikes a necessity because of the location of Sixth College and dorms etc?

@TNEsaid & @Christian Wu
Im going to admit day!!!! hope to see you at sixthh :D

Actually, Sixth just spent a couple of million dollars to renovate the dorms over the past summer. So everything, like carpet, study room, kitchen, bathroom, etc, is NEW.

And Foodworx is one of the few dining areas that carry groceries. It's super convenient when you need to pick up some fruit, bread, cereal, or whatever.
