Sixth College!

What is cat 125? i’m so confused

are u allowed to dorm w/ other people from other colleges? no, right?
and are u stuck in the same college for 4 years?
do you take classes with people from other colleges? say for example, my friend is in muir but i’m in 6th, will i have a chance to take classes w/ her?

^^^CAT = Culture, Art & Technology. It’s the theme of the newest ‘Harry Potter’ college at UCSD, Sixth College.

actually you can dorm with other people. dont know much about it but its called all campus housing.

yes you are stuck in 6th but again thats like saying your stuck in griffindor. doesnt meant anything but to people who go to ucsd.

and yes, its literally like harry potter. you take classes with people from other colleges. you just have ONE specific writing course that is specific to your college that you have to take. which for sixth is CAT. finally, CAT is broken down to 5 quarters. the first 3 classes. CAT 1,2,3 you take your freshman year. then as a junior or senior you do a practicum (senior project) and take CAT 125.

Sixth college is right next to the 5 freeway. Is the highway noise disturbing?

its really not that close to the highway you’ll see when you get there. id be more worried about party noise than the freeway.

lol okay … hows the food in sixth college? Also, I already submitted my housing contract (no downsides if I decide to not attend UCSD). I am going to opt for a single … how are sixth college singles? Will there be enough social life in the commons to warrant having a dorm room to myself when I want it?

LOL, food is food, its not like you have to eat at Foodworx all day everyday. They redid the dining hall the year I moved off campus, since it was only 2 years guaranteed housing back then. I wouldn’t know how it is now, but wasn’t bad back then, just not a whole lot of selection. Sixth I think RARELY has singles, I actually don’t even think they have singles for freshman. I think they only way you might get it is if you are super lucky and got to live in the second year apartments your first year, then they are decent sized, however, not as big as the ones in Marshall. Social life on campus is what you make of it, tons of stuff to do (granted sometimes you need a car) but its not like the dorms get super crazy with parties. Well, at least not at sixth, just because it so easy to get caught for drinking/partying.

The food on campus is decent and like abc002 said, you don’t have to eat at Foodworx all the time, it’s just the closest one. I always end up eating wherever my classes are so there’s plenty of variety. Foodworx’s main things are made-to-order personal pizzas and sandwich/wrap station.
Having the room to yourself really depends on who you room with. Like, my roommate works during the night, so she’s usually sleeping or gone while the girls next to me are usually home for the weekend. But there are plenty of places to hang out if you needed space from people such as the common room or the building’s study room.
If you REALLY wanted a single, you could always opt to live in the apartments (which are nice) which are purely singles and doubles, but you won’t be around 1st years as much. But I’ve only seen one single in the res halls (though, I haven’t really looked through all the buildings so there may be a lot more than i know)
And you can DEFINITELY take classes with friends in other colleges. Haha i’ve managed to have all my classes (except CAT) with my friend in ERC.

do you have to buy food every single day? i feel like we’re going to get fat if we have to buy food and eat junk food lol

When you pay for housing they give you a meal plan with a set amount of Dining Dollars that you can spend for the rest of the quarter, so how you use it is all up to you. These dollars can only be used in dining halls and markets, but the markets sell lots of random things such from blenders to donut makers to school supplies to dishes; so if you don’t spend it on food, there’s always something to make use of it.

How long does it take to walk/bike to the beach from sixth?

is a car necessary? or no?

I’m not sure how exactly long it is to the beach, but its simple to walk there. Thing is, sixth is on the east part of campus, and you gotta go west for the beach, so it’ll take you a little longer than other people.
For the car issue, it all depends on how much you’ll want to get off campus. Parking is crap here, its very difficult to get a spot, especially one near the dorms. And it is kinda expensive for a parking permit. I don’t go off campus that often, maybe once a week at most, and I get by with walking, buses, and having friends with cars:)

yeah that’s my one major concern… farthest college from the beach right next to the 5 freeway :(

@prodigy cmon… abc said the 5 fwy noise isnt a concern… and it wont kill you to be a little further from the beach. what’s a bike for anyway?

Lol I know sorry… just a bit disappointed that I didn’t get into my first choice (Muir). I guess I should just be happy that I got into such an amazing school!

@prodigyy11 muir was my first choice too! i really want to know why i didn’t get in ): well sixth college is better than nothing!

and thank you for everyone else who contributed to this thread. I’ve learned a lot!

oh, and how difficult is it to adjust to living in a triple? I’ve heard it’s really cramped! and if you have any pictures please share!

I just got accepted to the 6th college also and I heard that there is no party/night life at ucsd. Do you know if thats true?? Also how far is 6th college from the other ones? My friend got into Marshall and I feel like I won’t ever see. And for the dorms, can you send any pictures? Is there a closet in the triple? Whats the layout, is it better to get a double? HELP!!

i didn’t get into revelle [my first choice, per my parents request really]. i dont even remember what my order was. Looking back, I kind of wish I applied for warren first. But it doesn’t matter that much since like they said, the colleges are just like Harry Potter “houses”

Anyway, @ that person that needed help: one sixth college poster said that she had a lot of classes with her friend from ERC because only the writing program is unique to each college [“house”]

as for partying, abc said there partying doesnt occur at sixth because it’s too easy to get caught. however, that does not mean no partying occurs everywhere else.
