So heres my deal:
1. Im indian my parents forced me into college ( Boston U) as a pre med bio major
2. Hated it, did the whole "rebel" thing, ended up with a 1.9 GPA at the end of freshmen year
3. Changed my major to International Relations (NO MORE SCIENCE!) got straight A's this semester, GPA is now a 2.7
4. More things that make me cool for schools: I am a paid research assistant, hired based on writing samples, working on the manuscript for Prof. Steven Katz new book ( to be printed next fall, my name is int he acknowledgements yayy)
5. Have had thought piece about the Taliban in the NWFP of Pakistan published in the International Relations Review
6. Needless to say I am a spectacular writer

On a serious note, BU is costing me 20K per year, I cant afford that anymore, I want to transfer to a school with a good International Relations/ Middle Eastern Studies Programs, I dont care about rankings and tiers.

High school GPA- 3.4 SAT SCORE- 1880

Schools considering for transfer:

George Mason
American University
Miami University in Oxford
University of Delaware
Bennington College
Tufts University(haha)

So tell me what are my chances as a transfer, I am extremely articulate, a great writer, I am extremely passionate about my subject ( Islamic/Middle Eastern Studies) and have a B+ or higher in all of the corresponding classes ( even though I got a D in chem). I am completely fluent in Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu, and English. THANK YOU!!

George Mason - match
American University - reach
Miami University in Oxford - ?
University of Delaware - reach
Bennington College - ?
Tufts University - high reach

How about University of Michigan- Ann Arbor, the more I look into that school the more I like it, but I feel like I wont have a strong chance with a 2.7 gpa… what do you guys think?
And yeah…I have no clue why I said Tufts. I am not even applying there now. By the end of the year my GPA should be a 3.0+ but it wont matter bc they will only look at my current GPA.

As a state, MI is in extremely poor shape fiscally, the only OOS students they want are either full pay or tip top students who they will give merit scholarships to (which does not include transfers). Ask about FA for OOS transfers on the FA forum and see what kind of responses you get. Only 2 publics treat OOS students like they do IS for FA, UVA and UNC-CH.

As for the privates, while your EFC may be 0, unless they say that they meet full need AND they don’t give loans, you’re not out of the woods yet. Finally, while schools that use the Profile all get your same financial information, they all calculate need differently, so the schools you’ve listed may cost you as much or more than the 20k you’re currently paying at BU.

oh no, thanks for all of that insight entomom!! are there any schools that you would suggest? schools that you think would give a student like me significant aid! thanks again

You need to focus on schools that meet need. Tufts is the only school on your list that does. But frankly, with a 2.7 and 1880, getting in will be highly unlikely.

The problem is that schools that meet need are all top schools. It seems your best bet will be a state school where you’re a resident. I’m honestly not sure you can do better tha $20K unless you commute to an in state school.

Regardless of the GPA etc, transfers are not treated the same way with respect to financial aid. That is why it is important to choose carefully going in as a freshman. Typically a transfer student loses aid, does not find a better deal elsewhere!

Agree with the last sentence (“typically”), but from my experience, the first sentence is too absolute. A few of the most selective schools with the most generous FA policies will treat transfers the same way they treat a fr admit. I don’t think this applies to the schools this particular OP can get into, but want to make this clear to other members reading this thread.
