Does anyone know the number of undergraduates, average class size, and student-to-faculty ratio for UMich?

look on their site

i just went to an info session/campus tour there
theres about 26,000 undergrads, and the average class size is usually 30-40 students.. some classes have more, some less
and the student:teacher ratio is like 17:1

Thanks! I did look on their site, but the stats weren't on there.

USNews has the student/faculty ratio at 15:1.

Most of the classes have 25 or fewer students, but they have some mega intro courses. In the mega courses, you meet with GSIs (Graduate Student Instructors) in smaller groups during the week.

Their site says the student to faculty ratio is 9:1

SubMachine, even though the data from USNews is from 2005, it hasn't changed by that much. The information from USNews is from a uniform form that all schools complete... so you can get a true apples to apples comparison. It may now be 14:1 but I highly doubt it is 9:1 unless they are counting GSIs.

See the Common Data Set:

In summary, for 2005-2006:

number of undergraduates: 25,467

average class size (see pg26):

Class Size Distribution

2-9 => 379
10 - 19 => 973
20 - 29 => 798
30 - 39 => 326
40 - 49 => 135
50 - 99 => 294
100 + => 219

student-to-faculty ratio:

Fall 2005 Student to Faculty ratio: 15 to 1 based on
32,114 students and and 2,155 faculty

Note: Report the Fall 2005 ratio of full-time equivalent students (full-time plus 1/3 part-time) to full-time equivalent instructional faculty (full-time plus 1/3 part-time).

==> You can read the Common Data Set for any college you are considering to compare. Many of the links have been accumulated here:

More than 54,000 students on three U-M campuses ( Ann Arbor, Dearborn and Flint) come from every state and 129 countries. The Ann Arbor campus, with more than 39,000 students, offers 6,500 courses each year. Students can choose from more than 225 undergraduate majors and 600 degree programs offered by its 19 schools and colleges. Classes range in size from fewer than 10 to several hundred; the student/faculty ratio is 9:1.

Submachine, the Common Data Set referred to by WS17 refers only to the undergraduate population at Ann Arbor. It does not, for example, include graduate school data... which has a lower faculty/student ratio. In short, it is more accurate and is used by USNews. I must admit, however, I'm sceptical about the 9:1 number even with graduate schools counted.

Much of that comes in when they count Medical School faculty which includes many doctors who practice at UM Med Center and oversee some med students in their practices. There are about 2000 of those.
